This **** is interesting as **** .

Apparently it's part of a group who call themselves the UX, an underground
organization that improves the hidden corners of Paris, including those the French
government has ignored or lacks funds for.

The group includes architects and historians, and in 2007 they received attention for
restoring the famous clock in the Panthéon, IN SECRET. Never caught, they
announced their work upon completion at a meeting with the DJ 4DM1Nistrator of the
Panthéon, who called the police.

there was an issue of National Geographic about it a while back. I thought the group was awesome, but a few of them seemed like radicals. What I mean is some of them didn't care about their surroundings, like delinquents.

It wasn't about the UX per say, just people who like life on the fringe and are fascinated by the tunnels.

However, according to the French Wiki article, the French court refused to condemn any of the members since "illegal restoration of monumental clocks" is not a criminal offence.

Shortly after, France surrendered.
User avatar #136 to #9 - fakereality (04/12/2013) [-]
Why the **** does everyone act like France is a bunch of pussies. Just because Germany stomped them in one war, they only surrendered because they were completely ******* outclassed and knew it would be smarter to just let the Germans do what they wanted, and they didn't give up without a fight, either, they fought FURIOUSLY, with BRITAIN, in the battle of France. They, next to Great Britain, have won the most wars in history. Look at Napoleon ******* Bonaparte. And that's not to mention that without the French army to swoop in and save the day, Great Britain would have defeated the US in the American Revolution, and the United States wouldn't even be a country. So instead of dissing them for surrendering, how about you realize that you should be ******* thankful for them for gaining us our independence. Oh, and they have nuclear weapons, if you didn't know, which nobody makes ''just because''. Thumb me down, I really do not give a **** , but I had to defend France from you guys trying to make it look like they're pussies. And no, I am not from France, nor have I ever been there, and I am American.

it's a running gag. everyone knows France is a formidable nation with a mighty military (French Foreign Legion) and a serious world power. don't get so butthurt, kid. it's only for the lulz.
User avatar #140 to #139 - fakereality (04/12/2013) [-]
Uh, maybe a few people take it as a joke, but most Americans are dead serious about thinking that France is a wannabe world power.
#137 to #136 - unclaimedusername (04/12/2013) [-]

Dude, it's just a joke. It's common knowledge that France is a relevant world power today and that they played a large role in the American Revolution. Don't take a lighthearted running gag as a serious insult. It was a well-crafted argument, but aimed at the wrong person.

At least the group in Paris is somewhat illegal.
They've stolen official documents/blueprints of the underground tunnel system, and according to law they are trespassing. Civilians aren't allowed in those tunnels for several reasons, among that their own safety.
The UX are really cool though, I once saw a documentary following some of them around in the tunnels showing some of their works. They just want to help their city.
User avatar #56 to #14 - Zydratejunkie (04/11/2013) [-]
Les UX don't just fix things up though, they hold random concerts in old quarries, and have poetry readings, and act out plays and **** . It would be a pretty damn cool secret society to be a part of. I mean, if we were to make our own we could start with more party oriented stuff like they did, and work our way up to repairing forgotten monuments. When we develop the required skills to do it properly.

The Parisian authorities oppose the group's actions, starting a police unit to track them through the sewers and catacombs of Paris, and attempting to apprehend and charge them.
Charges were brought against the four Untergunther restorers of the Pantheon clock, but at trial, after twenty minutes deliberation, the judge ruled in their favor. One of the government's prosecutors referred to the charges as "stupid."

"The catacombs under Paris"

are these the same catacombs where the walls are made of bone? Because if so I don't care what movies you're playing, I'm not going near that place.
#111 to #105 - anon (04/11/2013) [-]
The reason they are piled like that was because the cemeteries were flooding and they had space from removing stone to use for buildings.
It's not like the bones are holocaust jews or anything.
User avatar #114 to #111 - seniorawesomesauce (04/11/2013) [-]
No I know, they used the stone to actually build the city centuries ago, then they "replaced" them with bones from the deceased during the plague.
