i love starcraft campaigns but i seriously cannot play that stupid game in multiplayer.
with other multiplayer games, i eventually get good enough to do well but in starcraft everyone is ridiculously, unbelievably good.
there is no learning curve.
there is only death

but you cant get it legitimately without setting yourself back 150~dollars because its only in cd form and its considered a collectable so i would advise that you pirate it

Yeah....i wouldnt care about buying the game anyway...EA shut down multiplayer server so all play on Gameranger. And nobody gives a damn if you have original CD or some pirated version unless you have same CD key as them which exclude these 2 players to play together.
There are also selfmade version to play only multiplayed so you dont have to download all 4,5 GB but only under 1 GB.

I feel like the strategic value of games like starcraft is undermined by how fast you are, and i'm just not that quick. So i stick to games like Total war and World in Conflict.

Bronze is where the fun is at!
Back in WoL early days i was (maybe lucky) and ended in platinum. Felt kinda weaker than most. Ended up taking a loing break from laddering. 2-3 season later i decide to go again, gets placed in bronze, fun games all day. Since i didn't really care if i lost, cause i was already at the lowest bracket. Thus also allowing me to do all the cheesy strats.

Start with playing as terrans, block the path into your base with supply depots and barracks, marine and marauder rush them, try and coordinate the rush with your team. And learn the hotkeys. Best advice I can offer for those just learning their way around multiplayer.

It's hard to learn Starcraft from scratch, it's like a smokers three-day hump, especially if your only experience with the game is the Single Player. Once you get a feel for how the game works, the whole thing will open up to you.
I agree though, the learning curve is a sharp cliff of despair, either it clicks or it doesn't.

Alot of competitive games have a steep learning curve.
I've recently gotten into Counter Strike, and it's ******* crazy.
If anything, having only 300 hours in, playing constant pubs and whatnot, I'm only decent. Still very ******.
So don't feel so bad.
No matter what, there will always be someone better than you, and in a sense, if you do suck, it's an incentive for you to get better at the game.
That's why I love something like Counter Strike so much. It's frustrating as ****. But at the same time, in between an actual scrim or a round, you have that amount of KO time where you're slowly taking in what you did right and what you did wrong. And therefore you are adapting to the way that you play.
I'm no RTS player.
But CS is all about tactics and adapting to newly done tactics.
Im pretty sure that if you just keep to it, you'll get better.

RT strategy games will always be on a completely different level than a FPS as far as tactics and strategy go. And just my opinion but Star Craft has become the butthole of RTS games... it's terrible. There are strategies that are completely overpowered and have no real counters, it all comes down to who is faster with macros.
Now... C&C3 and Red Alert 2 were damn fine competitive RTS games. Every strategy had an equal and opposite counter and most games could move into mid-late game all out wars instead of just rush wins.
