Just for that, anyone who had a weekend pass: consider them revoked!

Sobel may have been a dick, but he really wasn't a villain. You have to admit, he trained and conditioned those men to be in top shape. He made an excellent drill instructor, just a poor field leader

One of the soldiers from the company told Stephen Ambrose or another interviewer for the book that Sobel made Easy Company into the elite unit it was.
User avatar #11 to #6 - ninjastarthrow (04/07/2013) [-]
Yeah, the 501st regiment was the best because of him. He just wasn't cut out for combat.
User avatar #21 to #11 - CCpieman (04/08/2013) [-]
Imma gonna let that comment slide this time since it was a Star wars reference...but God help you if you make that mistake again.
User avatar #73 to #21 - ninjastarthrow (04/08/2013) [-]
Yeah, my bad. I meant 506th. Not sure where 501st came from. There was a 501st infantry regiment in World War Two but I don't know. My brain decided to rebel against me.

As much as he is a dick, he is a really good trainer. Without him pushing those guys as hard as he did, they wouldn't be as good as they were.
User avatar #50 to #49 - sirbrentcoe (04/08/2013) [-]
he was a great conditioner, but an absolute **** leader. he couldn't handle himself in the field at all.
#55 to #50 - fcrocker (04/08/2013) [-]
Personally I think this is a great conditioner
User avatar #51 to #50 - Shramin ONLINE (04/08/2013) [-]
They did a good job of making that apparent in the training jump, where he hesitates for a moment. later its just making it obvious like his inability to read maps at all.
User avatar #52 to #51 - sirbrentcoe (04/08/2013) [-]
i say again. he conditioned those men for combat thru rigorous PT. but he could not lead. he made terrible decisions, and lost his unit as a result. I love that show.
User avatar #53 to #52 - Shramin ONLINE (04/08/2013) [-]
I could never really tell if he loved the company or if he just loved the idea of leading the company when he lost it. Thoughts?
User avatar #56 to #53 - sirbrentcoe (04/08/2013) [-]
oh, he definitely had the passion for leading. He could care less about the men. The way he constantly demoralized them, making them run Currahee 6 times more than any other company, revoking everyone's weekend passes for minimal infractions, and making that one trooper repeat the 12 mile hike for drinking from his canteen. That's just what I remember. He loved the idea of leading his men to victory, but he in no way shape or form had the capability of leading in a combat situation. He was in the show, and historically, a product of training, with no experience other than from the cost guard. Loved to lead, wasn't there to make friends.
User avatar #57 to #56 - Shramin ONLINE (04/08/2013) [-]
I suppose that is true.
I would argue that Speirs wasn't there to make friends either but he would at least concern himself with the mindset of his soldiers.
User avatar #58 to #57 - sirbrentcoe (04/08/2013) [-]
He was just observing the Chain of Command. He was much easier to relate to as a company leader, but he had his LT's do all his work.

I remember watching Band of Brothers before I watched Friends. Then I watched Friends in 2012, and a few months later I watch Band of Brothers again. MFW - never been quite able to recover from it either
