False. North, Central, and South America are known as "The Americas"
User avatar #51 to #6 - shadir (04/05/2013) [-]
America usually refers to either:

The Americas, a landmass comprising North and South America
The United States of America, a country in North America

He's not wrong, nor are the people who call the USA America
#88 to #6 - anon (04/05/2013) [-]
more of the point may have been that "AMERICA" can refer to any of the above places.

Apparently Alaska is not a part of the US.

But sure, keep on preaching about how ignorant other people are.

Funny all anyone ever calls us is Americans. I don't see why they are throwing a bitch fit.

"Death to America" and all those cliche'd lines and "The American Government" and then after all that "There's a difference between being American and from the United States hurr durr!"
User avatar #66 to #57 - alalalalal ONLINE (04/05/2013) [-]
OOOOOHHHHH i just got it! Osama bin laden didnt want to hurt the US, he wanted to expand it by declaring war on the other "America's"
#70 to #53 - anon (04/05/2013) [-]
Well you are an American if you live on the continent of America.
User avatar #85 to #70 - Shorticus (04/05/2013) [-]
It's not the continent of America. It's the continent of North or South America. No one from Canada, Mexico, Brazil, etc. calls themselves Americans because that is saved for the country America, or USA or the US or whatever else you want to call it. I do not call myself an American. I am Canadian and a North American, not an all-over American.
#83 to #70 - anon (04/05/2013) [-]
Then what else are Americans called since Canadians are Canadian, Mexicans and Mexican, Brazilians are Brazilian, Argentinians are Argentinian etc... and since all of them are part of the Americas, then they would be American also.
#58 - LtMcG (04/05/2013) [-]
Captain United States then?
User avatar #101 to #58 - puggles (04/06/2013) [-]
nope. then the mexican P.C. assholes would be butthurt little whiners.

Pretty certain this is all America.
User avatar #1 - superpats (04/04/2013) [-]
actually neither is correct.
The two continents make up The Americas.
The country is the United States of America.

Besides that, this is one of the most petty things to be upset about, ever. Does it really matter that people refer to it as America?
#3 to #1 - selfdenyingbeggar ONLINE (04/04/2013) [-]
In certain countries it's The Americas in others it's just one big America.
Nothing really matters.
#5 to #1 - anon (04/04/2013) [-]
Calling someone "American" is much easier than "A United States citizen".
#45 to #5 - insanefreak (04/05/2013) [-]
Same with Europe.

You have the continent Europe, and the European Union.
Imagine if they all started calling us European Union citizens..

United States OF America.

USA

pretty self explanatory.

I never knew the united states wer to the right of America :o

And yet, anyone with any semblance of intelligence will note that "America" (for most uses) is a shortening of "the United States of America". Similarly to how most people call Germany Germany, and not "die Bundesrepublik Deutschland [the federal republic of Germany]".

In other words, your argument is invalid; but you're likely not intelligent to notice.

still ..is not America nor the people should be call themselves Americans, you only have pointed at how lazy the "united states of america citizens" are
User avatar #89 to #76 - nyangiraffe (04/05/2013) [-]
It's not lazy, just saves time. There is a difference between being smart enough to save a bit of time, and being a lazy **** .
User avatar #79 to #76 - thatguywhohasbacon ONLINE (04/05/2013) [-]
Then Federal republic of Germany citizens are lazy too.

The problem is this: No other country recognizes itself with the name "America" in it's title. Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Uruguay, etc. etc. All of them have their own respective names, so, since we're the only one that is identified with "America" in our name, we get the privilege.
User avatar #37 to #12 - hudis ONLINE (04/05/2013) [-]
This kind of self-entitlement is one of many reasons people hate the U.S.
User avatar #38 to #37 - lexarcommander ONLINE (04/05/2013) [-]
There is no self-entitlement. It's simply logical.
User avatar #39 to #38 - hudis ONLINE (04/05/2013) [-]
You just proved my point. Did it at any point in that assessment occur to you that although the peoples of South America do not have their continent in their country's name, they still may find it ignorant and arrogant for the citizens of another country to proclaim their nation the one and true 'America', consequently leading the rest of the world to often associate the word 'America' with said nation?

I am not interested in an argument, I only wanted to get that point across, so I shall just post this here and go away.
User avatar #40 to #39 - lexarcommander ONLINE (04/05/2013) [-]
I in no way proved your point of being self-entitled as a nation (Even though, I will not deny that we are). And having had conversations with a few pure-blood Mexicans I go to school with (North American, but still), they complain if we call ourselves the United States. See, Mexico is made up of a bunch of separate states as well, so they find it arrogant that we refer to ourselves as such.

tl;dr: People jsut like complaining about the USA

#71 - xanderish (04/05/2013) [-]
I'm more bothered that US citizens call themselves "Americans" and you can't(don't) call other people from the continent "Americans"... It's like you'd only call the french citizens "Europeans" and not the people in actual europe. Or only call chinese people "Asians" and not everyone originating from the continent of Asia
User avatar #87 to #71 - redneckhokage (04/05/2013) [-]
we call every in the middle Mexican, everyone below them from there specific country, and above us Canadians
User avatar #100 to #71 - puggles (04/06/2013) [-]
when they identify their nationality, people from countries other than the USA who live in the americas use their country's name. those from mexio say they are mexicans and residents of brazil are brazilians. unless they are part of some p.c. ******** , "lets piss on 'murica" movement, they don't refer to themselves as americans or demand the right to do so.
#13 - winglit ONLINE (04/05/2013) [-]
Technically it would be the Americas' because its split into north and south, you wouldnt call it Korea unless kim jong un unites them under his glorious leadership of course!

in my country they taught me that it's one whole America. The other divisions are just for reference like saying Latin America.
