Uhm... getting mad at you is difficult. I feel rather a little bit sad for you, as you know so little about this world you live in.

I'm German myself, and yes, I would agree that we share a rather similar culture with Austria. I know Germans who live in the south and say that they have more in common with Austrians than with people from, say, Berlin. But Switzerland? Just because a part of Switzerland speaks German? Nope. You certainly have never been in Switzerland.

Poland, Russia and Finland? Same comment: You have never been to Poland and Finland. I have been to Sweden, Norway, Finland and Poland and I know quite a lot of Russians, and if you really want to lump countries together, then Finland is still much closer to Scandinavian culture than Russian/Polish culture. I want to see how a finnish guy manages to pose as a polish guy or vice versa.

China, Japan, Korea, Thailand? That is really the point where I want to bash my head into a wall. Why are they the same to you? Because they roughly look the same? Once again: I am sure you have never visited any of these countries, and your knowledge of them is very superficial. Japan and Thailand are about as similar as Germany and, say, Tunisia. Japan and China are about as similar as Germany and Russia. Completely different languages, completely different attitudes towards life, completely different states of industrial development. Heck, if you're not a complete retard, then you'll be able to at least tell people from Thailand and Japan apart from just having a quick look at them.

I don't know, perhaps your ideas derive from the fact that the Scandinavian countries do share a fairly common cultural background, so you feel it has to be like that in the rest of the world. But someday you will get to travel a bit or you will actually meet people from these countries, and then you'll be quite surprised.

So no, deep inside, I know it's not the truth, because I have been to most of these countries.
#38 to #36 - anon (04/05/2013) [-]
England/Scotland/Wales/Ireland, as well.

Never even mind the fact that only one sixth of Ireland is still under British control. Saying Ireland is the same as Britian is like saying America is still a colony.
User avatar #46 to #36 - mctoilet **User deleted account** (04/05/2013) [-]
It's just funny to observe how people react to this statement.
Everyone think its such a big deal if its about their own country or maybe some countries they have visited, and experienced.

But i've never heard one complaining about the comparison to middle Eastern countries, Africa and South America. They mostly respond "meh,, Yeh ". ******************* ?

If i dig in all countries in these reagions i would most likely find differences bigger than between China and Korea.
So why would people agree with me on those?

I take my statements from everyones perspective. It's how i've experienced peoples reactions towards them. Why not just give in to it and accept that we are similar to our neighbours ? Do we really have to be Special? And if so, why do we take that away from 3rd world countries? they are not the same. still we group them.
Like i do, just reverse. Theres no shame in that.

not everyone is so smart, and i happily say i'm one of them.
So i once spoke to a person from Japan, Great guy (my first time on online chat with a stranger btw). I didn't know where he was from so i asked if he was Chineese, He said "No , im from Japan". I jokely responded "Ha owell, same **** different name right?"
There he went totally ******************** on me. Telling i can't compare them.
Why not just say "Ha, Well from your viewpoint i could see similarities, so i would agree with you on that. But i can tell you they are by far very different!"
Cool story bro! thanks for the info!
User avatar #53 to #46 - ruebezahl (04/05/2013) [-]
I wouldn't generalize like this. Like I said myself, I can understand if someone would mistake someone from Austria for a German (though most people from Austria might get mad about this - not because we are so different, but because Germany is viewed as a bit of an arrogant "bigger brother" to Austria and obviously for historical reasons). As a German, I would not be offended if an American asked me if I am from Austria (though usually, it's probably the other way around). Austrians in general are cool, laid-back people with a good sense of humor, so I would actually feel somewhat honored. The same goes e.g. for Dutch people... if someone thinks I am Dutch - hey, why not. Once again, great people! But I can understand why a Dutch person is somewhat offended if they are mistaken for a German, again for the same reasons as with Austria. ;-) If you are the smaller country next to a bigger country that previously had ambitions on ruling all of Europe, then you want to emphasize your own cultural identity.

Also, I have Japanese friends who jokingly say that all Europeans look the same to them. Obviously, they get why Europeans say the same about Asians. I guess if Japanese get offended about being mistaken for Chinese, then only because there is some animosity between the countries. But most Japanese can deal with it. I think they would be much more offended if they are mistaken for Thai people.

So no, I would not say that people are automatically offended when it's about their own country.
User avatar #59 to #53 - mctoilet **User deleted account** (04/05/2013) [-]
you, I like you.
Someone who actualy makes sense and has a valid indput.
I've not thought of that before, but i agree.

And your japanese friends are the best kind of people i know.
Thats how i would react. Though the people i've discussed this with on boards have automatically only defended their own country when i rudely put them in the same group as their fellow neighbour.

I usualy go to extreme comparisons for people to explain why they are so special compared to "insert country here". Most/all of it makes perfectly sense, but they usualy forget they descended from the same culture. and so actualy have more in common than they realise.
They could tell about Japanese and Chineese cultures. How extremly different they are.But their languages, words, race and whatnot have a faint similarity.
This is not Created random, or by accident. It's not a random that some countries seem the same and a miracle they also live next to eachother.

i just find it abit funny how people become offended and angry so easily. when theres actualy no reason for it.
User avatar #62 to #59 - ruebezahl (04/05/2013) [-]
Well, I guess it's all about how you say it. If you say "England/Wales/Scotland/Ireland: same **** ", then people from there will be quite offended. You should probably say "England/Wales/Scotland/Ireland: Most people from Argentina can't tell the difference" then most of them would probably admit that, sadly, it's the truth.
User avatar #65 to #62 - mctoilet **User deleted account** (04/05/2013) [-]
The Point was to offend them to get a reaction.
But i felt it was kinda harsh, Though no good discussion starts with "hey i like you. Lets discuss this"
My real opinion isn't as rude as appared in my first comment. By far. but i just want people to think about it once in awhile. we are not that different.
This discussion could mightaswell have been Religion. lol
User avatar #41 to #36 - mctoilet **User deleted account** (04/05/2013) [-]
That's correct. all of it.
But you see, I havent Been to these countries. i don't know their cultures.
People then say , "well then you may not have an opinion".
I've only studied the internet, Really.

But i sometimes take some drastic assumptions for people to realise that we are not that different.
You could ask a random person like me. or your grandma. Someone who has no knowledge of their culture or language.
Play an audio file on Chineese, Then Japan, then korean. She most likely would assume China or Japan. without knowing wich languages to pick from.
Despise what you say, they still sound alike to the rest of the world, unless you are a great anime fan. they usualy rage at this point.

Call me stubborn and dumb. and yeh maybe i am. but i don't see any wrong doing by grouping them this way.
In my country we have 2 kinds of people. THose who are living on the big island and those on the mainland.
If i say " Oh man, Those who are living on the island are the same people living on the mainland"
Everyone would rage!
"oh coultures!" "oh languages!" und so weiter.
But we are actualy all Danish, talking the same language with a different dialect. Eating the same food, just slightly different.
Still they want to be some Special compared to others. even though they lookalike to the rest of the world.
User avatar #52 to #41 - ruebezahl (04/05/2013) [-]
So your point is: To dumb people, people from those countries basically appear to be the same?

Well yes, to that I obviously agree. But you can take that as far as you want. Go to Russia and speak Danish, and perhaps there will be stupid Russians who from your looks and the sound of your language would think that you are German or Dutch.

Bring someone from Morocco to Germany, and there will certainly be enough idiots who will guess that he is from Afghanistan.

And I don't want to know how many Brits are mistaken for Americans e.g. when travelling to South America.

So in that regard, your distinction is still too finely tuned. Dumb people will always mistake you for something else. I guess the good thing to take away out of that is that essentially, we are not all so different.
User avatar #56 to #52 - mctoilet **User deleted account** (04/05/2013) [-]
Exactly. Not everyone has knowledge of all cultures.
So why not spare the Rage on people just because they have a hard time telling them apart?
It's not wrong to assume i'm from sweden. I understand that perfectly.
Why not just take it lightly? apperenelty there is a reason why these comparisons where made.
we are all different, but there is a need to group us up to get a better understanding.

i would question him if he would assume im from africa. Where did he get that comparison from?
neitherway he must have a good reason to assume it. and i would ask further. but i would not rage on him and tell hes stupid.
we are all intellectual, taking strings of information and combining them to get a possible awnser. May that awnser be wrong. no harm.

Just. Don't get mad so much. its just a country. Don't try to be so special. you might look more like your neighbour than you wish to admit.
