Depends on the artist/band. A lot of smaller bands are getting screwed over from pirating.

Being someone who is in a band and someone who is currently working for a record label I can shed some light on that. When bands sign to a label, they have to sign a contract that states how many albums the band will make under the label. Usually recording an album takes a ton of money (can sometimes cost around $100,000) The price greatly varies depending on the quality of the studio, how much the designer doing the album artwork charges, how much artwork you want done, how many cds do you want to produce on an original run, the list goes on and on. Of course the band will more than likely not have that kind of money to invest on an album so what ends up happening is that the record label they are on will give them an advance (however much they need) This is essentially a loan to the band. By doing this the company is making an investment and of course will expect their money back which is why a good portion of the album sales will go to them. The bands will see less of the money at first because they are trying to pay off this loan but will still have some royalties to them. A good amount of money that goes to ticket sales will also pay the company back and of course some money will go to the bands as well. Bands usually make a good amount of money on merch at shows because often times the record label will give them a set amount where the band can make 100% of the profit. This will of course go towards living expenses on and off the road. Starting bands will of course be scraping the bucket when doing this because of audience size. My point here is that buying cds from stores/digitally does help the band because you are getting them out of debt with each purchase. Not to bash on some bands but sometimes they can get screwed because they didn't read the contract and just signed away. NEVER DO THIS. I have friends who signed with the label im working for and they love it because they closely read the contract and negotiated with the label so they aren't screwed :)

I of course am guilty of pirating (who isn't) but if I like what I hear then I will go out and buy something from the band because I know how tough it is........probably why my cd collection is getting harder to store. There's so much more I could say on the matter but I don't think anyone wants to read a book. If anyone has any questions on the matter, I'll be more than happy to answer!

Yeah such is the blessing and curse of having physical copies. Storing it all and buying it all can put a number on one's wallet and space, but being able to look at such a collection with pride makes it all worth it. Steven Wilson and Tool are huge influences on our music! :) Yeah KScope is a fantastic label with a wonderful assortment of bands, it would be such a privilege to be able to sign with them one day. The label that I'm working for is one of the smaller ones so I get where you're coming from completely.

He's a pretty good rapper, but you probably just heard his singles, never The Power of the Dollar or The War Angel LP or even The Big 10. I thumbed you up too, you shouldn't be hated for having an opinion.
#16 to #12 - anon (04/05/2013) [-]
Well, your opinion isn't fact, just because you don't like something doesn't mean others might.

He isn't that terrible if you look at the other rappers nowadays like drake, lil wayne etc.
