Actually, it was originally so the U.S. military could access all the feeds from their satellite dishes at once. Then they figured out that sending information is useable by the civilian sector too.

Also, texting. Originally that was supposed to be for engineers and store-worker transmitting complicated codes, such as serial numbers.

I thought it was so millitary an university could transmit important breakthroughs faster. :/
