I live in a city called Reno. No not the fictionalized version you see on "Reno 911", but the real city that is actually even more ridiculous. Why? Because my city is an artistic joke. In a laughable effort to attempt to make us look classy, our city's board has taken to giving Reno the title "Artown" Our city gets all the hipster runoff from San Fran and the Bay area, and all the snobs who believe they know what good art is. Art that our board wastes thousands of dollars on. Art like the sculpture in this pic that I assure you isn't stolen from Beetlejuice

Pfft. Lake Tahoe myself. Hate that red spiky piece of **** .... i mean with the Atlantis right down the way with the bridge-bar-casino and the huge torches ontop? that's just classic in comparison to that thing which reminds me of a large amount of swordfish trying to fit through a tiny hole at the same time

but when I show this to my douche bag high school art teacher he calls it too "generic and over done"
#78 to #29 - anon (04/04/2013) [-]
Tell the teacher to **** off. It's absolutely wonderful.
#51 to #29 - anon (04/04/2013) [-]
I have trouble believing that you did that in high school, and even more trouble believing that your teacher would have criticized that.
Unless this was some sort of full semester project.
#64 to #51 - harryblazer (04/04/2013) [-]
**** no, I couldnt do THAT. We had to pick our favorite artist and use thier theme/style for a few months and I picked leonid afremov. half my class either coped out and pick something "abstract" (splattered paint on a canvess,a black and white photo of a shovel. ect) or were douchey enough to call that art. When i showed him this, he laughed it off

It's obviously captures the essence and characteristics of line in all it's perfection.
User avatar #99 to #80 - impaledsandwich ONLINE (04/04/2013) [-]
It represents the gullibility of today's society and the petty arbitrariness of our economy. The line symbolizes the divide between art and **** , and its small presence on the page implies that that line is fading away. The things on the ends draw one's eye to the piece in the first place, perhaps representing the impact of advertising and believing what one is told to believe, especially about art. The fact that no effort was put into the piece suggests a challenge, maybe an insult, to the mainstream, rejecting even quality to be truly unique.

In summary, it's **** and the artist knew he sold **** .
#114 to #99 - curses (04/04/2013) [-]
I got a better word for that artist. SCAM ARTIST.

To be technical, the anime portrayed is Sword Art Online. So I suppose it is indeed a type of art.

What a useless skill to have... seriously. Art degrees are the dumbest wastes of money there is. It's so ******* stupid and useless. You'll never find a job with one. What do you call an art graduate? Unemployed.
User avatar #30 to #14 - gmarrox (04/03/2013) [-]
Not more than a few years ago, Computer Science was a liberal arts degree at most colleges.

3. Onion
4. Tomato
5. Eggplant
6. Pickle

Not true dumb-ass. I personally have no art training at all. But if it wasn't for people like that we would not have all these bad-ass looking video game characters.
#34 to #27 - anon (04/03/2013) [-]
Some people think they can survive off their pictures when they can't. They are they dumb asses.
User avatar #37 to #34 - mookiez (04/03/2013) [-]
I think the true dumbasses are the ones that pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for the paintings. Either way they are both dumbasses, I was simply stating that we still need people like this for graphics designers.
#42 to #37 - anon (04/04/2013) [-]
Agreed they're both dumb asses. There are millions of other people who are as good as them if not better. Millions. Find a general degree to major in, then keep art as a hobby.
#36 to #14 - anon (04/03/2013) [-]
Game designer
Car designer
Animator
Movie effects specialist
Commercial director/ designer
Music video director

All jobs that can be obtained with a art experience and a degree.

I'd like to point out that I'm not an art major, but there are opportunities in art fields, especially in something like graphic design or education.
#23 to #20 - anon (04/03/2013) [-]
Most people don't want to become art teachers. They think they can survive off their pictures when they can't.
User avatar #24 to #14 - codyxvasco (04/03/2013) [-]
Not all degrees exist for the sole purpose of getting a job.

Some actually enjoy the education.....just sayin.
#32 to #24 - anon (04/03/2013) [-]
You get a degree to get a job. Otherwise you're just wasting your money. Major in something you can actually get a job in then take some classes you're interested in. I'm in college now and like US history, so i'm taking some US history classes. I know better than to major in it because my options are history teacher or.... history teacher. There's not many jobs. I'm a criminal justice major now, many opportunities.
User avatar #35 to #32 - codyxvasco (04/03/2013) [-]
I like drawing, if I had the training and knowledge about art that say, My art teacher had, I would be ecstatic. Yes, maybe the primary reason for going to college is to acquire a career, but that's not the only benefit to education. Education on it's on is benevolent! A degree in art may not be as useful as one in physics or chemistry, but it comes with skill, skill that can be used to better your life. Is that really such a waste?

Try not to use: "But there are no jobs you can get with it!" as a retort.
#41 to #35 - anon (04/04/2013) [-]

It's not about others being better, it's about making yourself better.
#66 to #44 - anon (04/04/2013) [-]
There's no point in making your artistic skills better... you'll never use them for anything productive. Focus on your profession. Better your career.
