What a useless skill to have... seriously. Music degrees are the dumbest wastes of money there is. It's so ******* stupid and useless. You'll never find a job with one. What do you call a music major? Unemployed.
User avatar #79 to #6 - snaresinger (04/05/2013) [-]
So instead of responding to anything I say or admitting you're wrong, you just thumb me down. Pathetic. Have you perhaps considered that many people condescend to you, not just musicians, because you act like scum?
User avatar #78 to #6 - snaresinger (04/04/2013) [-]
Let me compile a list of the incorrect assumptions I've so far seen you make, just so you can have easy reference.

1. All, or even most, musicians want to be performers
2. Musicians want to be famous
3. Musicians who want to become performers or recorders all want to become famous.
4. All musicians have smug attitudes.
5. There are no jobs in music besides performance.
6. Learning elementary music is a waste of time.
7. All money in music is inconsistent.

I wasn't going to respond to them, but I'm afraid you'll refuse to understand otherwise, so I guess I'll respond to them all in order.

1. Live performers make up a very small percentage of musicians. If you want the exact statistics, then get off your ass and go visit a university. Take a poll. Actually learn something.
2. Most musicians do it for the passion. Again, if you want proof, go observe something in the field instead of masturbating to your own fury.
3. Same thing as number 2, I just wanted to make that specific point, because a lot of people seem to get this wrong.
4. So you hate smug musicians, eh? You know who else hates smug musicians? Other musicians. Everybody hates smug people, you smug jackass.
5. Elementary teacher, grade school teacher, band conductor (many different types), choir conductor, theory professor, history professor, instrumental tutor (many different types), vocal tutor, composition tutor, composer, arranger, performance artist, recording artist, instrument repairperson, production assistant, production manager, stage assistant, stage manager. I can't think of anything else, but there are others. None of these require fame, by the way.
6. You need to login to view this link Not saying that it means causality, but it's pretty heavily implied.
7. See #5. Again, I just wanted to make that specific point.

I have a question for you, too: Why do you care so much?

I'm thinking that you're probably checking these direct replies, so I'm going to go ahead and remind you that professional performing (which is very hard to make stable money with) makes up an extremely small percentage of the jobs in music. You obviously do not know what you're talking about, and I'm not quite sure why you're on this anti-music tirade. I don't know what musician raped you as a kid to make you so butthurt, but please stop trying pathetically to insult a profession about which you know nothing and fighting a cause which you have no reason to fight. Good day to you, faceless coward.

No bad experiences with any musicians, just hate their smug attitudes. And i'm specifically talking about the ones who think they can make good money as a professional performer.
User avatar #77 to #70 - snaresinger (04/04/2013) [-]
You're making a logical fallacy here by assuming all musicians have smug attitudes. You're also being a bigot by acting out against them because of their career pursuits. Tell me- if they're so destined to fail, and you hate them, why don't you just let them fail? Win-win. The answer seems to be obvious- insecurity. I assure you, you have nothing about which to be insecure. Musicians are normal people too. So please, for the sake of everyone, stop being a bigot. You sound almost exactly like Fred Phelps.

User avatar #40 to #6 - darman (04/04/2013) [-]
Music Majors get plenty of jobs, particularly teaching. It doesn't end up glamorous as many outside believe, however; music is an essential part of our culture and being human. There is always demand for the arts, even if it doesn't seem as practical as becoming an engineer.

Side note, my high school calculus teacher got a masters in aerospace engineering and couldn't get a job because the cold war ended and they weren't needed as much anymore. It happens in every field.
#42 to #40 - anonymous (04/04/2013) [-]
I doubt most people majoring in art aspire to teach high school band... At least he had many other options to fall back on. A math teacher is more stable than a musician living gig to gig...

Keep it as a hobby than, not a major. Play an instrument, maybe you'll get a scholarship, but once you get to the college do not waste your time and money on a music degree.

The odds of becoming a famous musician are extremely low... especially if you have no connections. They need to live in the real world, not their little ********* .
User avatar #53 to #32 - snaresinger (04/04/2013) [-]
Have you ever heard of a little position called a teacher? Perhaps a composer? Or maybe a recording artist? Perhaps you've heard of people making extra money with music, in addition to day jobs?
#72 to #53 - anonymous (04/04/2013) [-]
I highly doubt that most people studying music aspire to become high school band teachers... They'll never become a famous composer or recording artist either. All it's good for is the extra money as long as you have a real job too, not just a hobby on the side which is all that music really can be.
User avatar #76 to #72 - snaresinger (04/04/2013) [-]
"I highly doubt"

The problem we're having here is that you're making an assumption, throwing in your unbased opinion, and you're not listening when experts are telling you the truth. As an expert in this subject, let me reinform you. Most music majors are aiming to become teachers or tutors, either part-time or full-time. Please don't give unbased opinions, because they're totally irrelevant in real debate. If you're going to argue, try gaining actual credibility before doing so. Do you have any actual credibility? I'll ask again- do you even have any reason for going on this little crusade? You don't seem like a troll, you just seem like an extremely poorly-informed person. What musician stole your girlfriend to make you act so childishly?
User avatar #23 to #6 - Wumbologist (04/04/2013) [-]

Actually, a music major can give lessons full time, do a double degree with a teaching college so they can teach in schools, land a job in a professional orchestra (money isn't great but job is good), busk and make $500 or more every day if your spot is good enough, repair instruments as a trade, and more...

True, it is difficult to become a professional musician, but it's a nice hobby and can be used to make money in a large assortment of ways.
User avatar #55 to #15 - snaresinger (04/04/2013) [-]
It really isn't that difficult to become a professional musician. Professional performer, yes, but there are more jobs besides performing.
#17 to #15 - anonymous (04/03/2013) [-]
Keep it as a hobby, not a profession. You're wasting your money in college.
#20 to #17 - taintedangel (04/04/2013) [-]
so, then what about the guys who play in orchestras for things like movies, tv shows, video games? Is that not a profession, you retard?
#35 to #20 - anonymous (04/04/2013) [-]
The money is inconsistent. They're not constantly working on a game or movie.
User avatar #49 to #35 - leel (04/04/2013) [-]
same with actors. I suppose nobody should ever be an actor.
#73 to #49 - anonymous (04/04/2013) [-]
Yeah basically. The performing arts are pretty stupid and impractical. Keep them as hobbies.
#66 to #49 - anonymous (04/04/2013) [-]
Or a director, a set technician or any other job in any form of performance or production.
#9 to #6 - thisshipdied (04/03/2013) [-]
Nah music majors actually make money by becoming teachers.
You're thinking of art majors.
#10 to #9 - anonymous (04/03/2013) [-]
Both of them are stupid majors. Most music majors think they can make money by playing music... when they can't. They're delusional.
User avatar #8 to #6 - Quarma (04/03/2013) [-]
Holy **** , reading music now = music major?

Man, I guess I got a music major at 7 years old then.

I'd never major in music, but have the utmost respect for those that do, for without music majors, we wouldn't have amazing bands like Dream Theater.

Also, in that case, you may as well stop watching all movies and listening to all your music, because I guarantee you that almost all professional musicians/movie studios will have a music major working in the studio one way or another, whether it's partaking in the actual composition of the piece, working on the sound design, or in some other way. And you may as well never go to an auditorium or sound stage of any kind either, because music majors made sure that sound travels the way it's intended to via acoustic treatment.

Not to be a douche, and I agree with you on everything else you said, but I just want to point out that engineers and architects make concert halls, not music majors. Granted, some of those people also majored in music, but that's not what teaches them how acoustics work.
#11 to #8 - anonymous (04/03/2013) [-]
Most music majors think they can make money by playing music... when they can't. They're delusional. If you think you'll be able to play songs in front of large audiences and make a lot of money than you're an idiot. There are millions of other people who play the same instrument or even more who are as good as you if not better. Millions.
User avatar #58 to #11 - snaresinger (04/04/2013) [-]
That's simply wrong, though. Most music majors are completely aware that performance is very hard to make money with. You clearly do not know how the music world works. Please do your homework next time.
User avatar #16 to #11 - solareyes (04/03/2013) [-]
My boyfriend's parents are both music majors, and I'll have you know that they're doing really well.
User avatar #14 to #11 - lebadass (04/03/2013) [-]
i dont think you get the point being a music major opens a wide variety of income sources actually playing music is a big one you dont have to play on stages in front of large audiences to make a living playing music
also, music majors can find jobs in sound engineering and music production as well as teaching
User avatar #12 to #11 - Quarma (04/03/2013) [-]
Except most people don't have true ambition and don't understand how it works. If you're rushing into just one career in music, yeah, you're bound to fail. If you're performing, teaching, and getting any supply of cash you can while a music major, you do fine.

Sometimes I imagine I'm a flying pony with a horn on the hooves so I can stab people while having struggle snuggle with them but then people tell me I'm weird but I'm not weird I just want to be the very best, like no one ever was. Being a pony with hair is my only dream in life and you can't take it away from me because if you take it away from me I won't be happy because you took my dream away and that's not cool why would you do that if you steal my dreams I might become weird and think of like arrows on the search bar and stuff. I mean come on lets be serious why would April fools day be celebrated worldwide if there's only 151 Pokemon in the first Generation? Isn't that kind of random? Shouldn't we celebrate it on some other day?!!? How about we ask Loki (He's the trickster god he cool) and maybe he'll answer to my prayers and become real then I'll have a friend so I can drink water with and whatever friends to together. Like open e-mails and burn then skin weird animals like a squirrel but I don't want to hurt squirrels. I like them, they're like turtles but different. I mean they can't fly like a razor but you know what I'm talking about since you mice are cool. They cool.
