Before the revolution came around, French had a white flag and white uniforms. Coincidence, I think not.

Did you know, the French invented the handkerchief, so that they would always have a white flag to carry with them at all times.

Ok. I know this is just teasing and all, but I have to say this. During WW2, France did the strategically right thing. Their military tactics AND arsenal was seriously outdated. So their leader had a choice: fight as hard as they can or surrender. If they fought, they would have surely lost and many, many French would have died. Then the Germans would have been extremely brutal to the civilians. If they surrendered, at least military would be kept as war prisoners and the Germans would be less inclined to brutality toward civilians. Also, people could organize into underground armies and spy for England and its allies. Yes, surrendering meant persecution of the Jews, but the authorities had a responsibility to the majority of the population. Their choice was correct.

FRANCE SURRENDERED
FRANCE MUST BE FULL OF PUSSIES
*sarcasm*

It's not like France wasn't and still isn't a decent military force, half of France surrendered to Nazis because they didn't want to end up ****** over like after the first World War.
If France never existed, the world would be drastically different, for many people, it would be significantly worse.
#60 to #4 - anon (03/31/2013) [-]
You do realize the Viche(French) government collaborated with the nazis during WW2 right? If they had just been defeated fine, everyone gets beaten a couple of times(cept' murica') but they actually helped the nazis. Step your history up,

Now i don't mean to sound bandwagony, but Frances defeat was partially their own fault. If they had invaded Germany during the invasion of Poland like they were meant to, Germany would have never been able to defeat them. (France had far superior armour and had probably 4 times the divisions on the border)
#72 to #7 - anon (03/31/2013) [-]

They had to calm down Germany even before Poland, i'm still quite mad at France, UK and Russia that they let Hitler invade Czechoslovakia just because "they didnt want war".

And yes, I'm Czech .. Y U STILL KEEP FORGETING US IN WW2?
#53 to #34 - intrepidy (03/31/2013) [-]
Well the thing is, it is alright to say we should have stopped the annexation of the czech lands now because we have hindsight, but at the time hitler had a point. The lands they took from you were all German speaking and we (the UK and France) were so unprepared for a war with Germany (Which would take place all over France and not the Czechslovakia) that we had to avoid it and get better prepared at all costs. The UK in particular only had a army of garrisons for its colonies and France had massive domestic problems with war as well as false security with the maginot line. The czech invasion we couldn't stop, i'm sorry D:

If the French had attacked on September 3rd when they declared war, the war would have been a lot shorter. Germany was not ready at the time and had most of its troops on the Polish front.

Hell, if France had used military force back when the jerries reoccupied the Rheinland like Churchill wanted, the war could have been a lot different.

A world power that was completely demolished by another war before and had not had a chance to fully rebuild against another world power that had recently taken 3 smaller countries and used new technology and a new frighteningly effective strategy that had never been seen before months prior with little or no help from it's allies?

Germany was even more demolished than France was at the end of World War 1. And they pretty much used the same reach around Belgium strategy they tried to use in World War 1 with different result.

Believe it or not, I do.

The resistance was pivotal in funneling intelligence to and from the Allies while occupied. The contributions of the French during the occupation were crucial to removing the Nazis from France and ultimately help us win the war in Europe.

We could be here talking all day about just how important France was.

I only posted this because I got a chuckle out of it...

Seems like a clever troll to me
User avatar #37 to #17 - Crusader (03/31/2013) [-]
"or is it all just gypsies"
I hate you for 2 reasons.
You are ignorant of Romani and Yeniche people, the two main "gypsy groups" of which I am descended of both.
You assume that if the area is not around a city or a city itself, it must be "gypsy".

First of all, there are small towns, cities, villages and farmsteads spread out through the country.
And an area cannot be "Gypsy" as the term "Gypsy" was used to describe Troupers and groups of people who traveled instead of growing roots, this was because "Gypsy" comes from "gypcian" short for "egypcian" because of the belief that all these people were Egyptian.
#40 to #37 - winglit (03/31/2013) [-]
Calm your tits Cursader for douchebagines, Im allowed to generalize a group of people if it makes my question easier to ask "oh no he made a broad stroke statement about gypsies UNLEASH THE RAGE!' so chill ok? you really expect me to care so much about gypsies? sorry i dont, and youve in no way answered my original broad stroke question
User avatar #44 to #40 - Crusader (03/31/2013) [-]
You're generalization does not make it easier, it in fact makes it harder, as the people answering don't know if you mean "is the country full of towns and villages" or if you mean "Is Paris the only permanent settlement"
#48 to #44 - winglit (03/31/2013) [-]
you are really an angry person aren't you
User avatar #45 to #40 - Crusader (03/31/2013) [-]
But, back to your question, yes there a other cities and towns throughout France much like there are throughout all countries.
It is something a quick Google search could answer.
User avatar #75 to #37 - mrblueftw (03/31/2013) [-]
oh hai crusader,
just asking a question, whats a gypsy? from what ive gathered from a unreliable source called funnyjunk they are a bunch of beggars. but of course i have no prior knowledge of gypsies so i have no idea.
User avatar #90 to #75 - Crusader (03/31/2013) [-]
It's hard to explain, but the Romani were the most common in Europe.
They were a group like any, except instead of putting down roots in a place, they traveled.
They were troupers largely, musicians, actors, acrobats, etc, they were the first traveling circuses really.
The term "gypsy" comes from the idea that they were Egyptian, when the Romani were from Eastern Europe.
People didn't like them because they had a different view of the world, they often didn't pay taxes, as they had no land, you kids would often run away with them, the origin of "running away with the circus", and yes, if they were in a city and they could not perform, they did beg and steal, there was a test called "7 bells" they used a manequin and put a suit on him, it had 7 bells set up around it, near the pockets, if you could get the purse without ringing the bells, you worked the crowd, originally it was a test for slight of hand to do performances.
Over the years as playhouses popped up, and more and more people wee cheating people out of their money by claiming to be Romani, people started to hate them, and hence you get the view of Gypsies that you have today.

There is a trilogy in the making called the Kingkiller Chronicles, in it the protagonist an "Edema Ruh" that universes version of a Gypsy, and it is quite accurate, lest the name changes, but how they lived and how they acted is the same.

Im asking really how wealthy is the country? I know its political system well enough, and its history better than most, but Currently the only reason you ever see France in anything is because of Paris, what else does France have? how many cities of decent size? and really what is its main export? if its national income doesnt depend on tourism then what? horse meat? how much do you know about countries other than your own bud... does your educational system cover every single nation and their economic situation as of the past few years?
User avatar #30 to #25 - defeats (03/31/2013) [-]

#31 to #30 - winglit (03/31/2013) [-]
Going back nearer the 100 year war, and prior to the execution of its monarchy, the current economic situation of a nation isnt history, its current events. (far as im concerned anyway

User avatar #43 to #41 - defeats (03/31/2013) [-]
Not on the same level as Paris, like most countries in the world, they have one city which is far larger and more dense than the others.

ah but if you look above you can see why i didnt, look at how angry these people got? and why? because i asked a question, i guess this was for my own enjoyment but also just to see something, look how fickle, how demanding the people of funnyjunk are, how angry they become when someone makes a broad question or doesnt know 1 thing, look at how much rage comes from a single statement, and how long it takes to get an answer at all, even if that answer is "go look it up" no one could tell me these things but they all jumped in to "prove their own worth" or at least thats what it looks like to me, ive rather enjoyed the responses and the red thumbs because you all helped me to prove my point
