I know this might sound like an EXTREMELY retarded question, but there's something I never understood about fallout.

If it takes place in the future, why does it have a 1950's style culture?

Yes, that is extremely retarded.
The world went into a nuclear war in the 50's, everything got ******.

Because it is set in a perpetual 50 culture. Without the War in Korea, we never had the Boomers, or the hippies, so culture stayed the same.

Understandable question.
Just going off of memory here, but Fallout takes place in an alternate universe, where, despite having superior technology then our own, the culture never really advanced beyond that of the 40's-50's era. Couple this with a literally Earth shattering nuclear war, and culture isn't allowed to advance beyond what it is, staying a remnant of it's former self.
I hope that helps.

you could argue that it made a second coming before the war in the 2050's or that the war might have begun to grow around that period in time thus no social evolution due to war.

fallout is making fun of the cold war when we were so afraid of a nuclear fallout cause by the soviet.

As far as I remember, it was due to the wars with the Soviet Union and communist China. The US wanted to stop communism from spreading, so they turned to their own form of hardcore nationalism, the "all american" life style of the 50's and 60's.

"The transistor, invented in our world in 1947, was not developed in the Fallout universe until the decade just before the Great War in 2077, while its successor, the semiconducting microprocessor chip, may have never been developed at all. As a result, the digital computers in Fallout are all of the old reel-to-reel tape type that take up large amounts of room. The mixed vacuum tube/transistor personal computers used on desktops are very large and bulky, while displays are small monochromatic cathode ray tubes rather than the liquid crystal flat panel displays now common in our own universe. Data is stored on holotapes or holodisks which electromagnetically store information as three-dimensional digital images. These computers are very advanced in their processing power, indicating that progress continued in computer science (albeit at a slower rate than in our universe), but the technology to make them smaller never emerged. Nor did user-friendly icon-based graphical user interface (GUI) operating systems, which first appeared commercially in our world in the 1980s. UIs remained fairly basic command-line affairs, and less frequently advanced voice interfaces (as per computers in 1950s science fiction) were developed for computer systems which made a GUI redundant on such systems. It's a 'what if' scenario where america was stuck in the cold war and 1950s ideals.

After WW2, our universe and that universe split off from eachother. The new universe kept on using and expanding upon nuclear technology. They also stayed int the 50's culture where 'all commies are evil'. They developed the nuclear powered car, robot butlers, robot soldiers, robot's with human brains in them. Science, especially nuclear science, was left unchecked. Then things slowly went to **** over the decades because of resources becoming scarce.

The European Union disbanded and had started fighting eachother, and the US had gone to war with China over these resources which lead to the US annexing Canada inorder to help save Alaska from the Chinese. Shortly after that the US, China, and the USSR all bomb the **** out of the planet.

You have to play through the games and be very emersed in it's lore... plus the gist of it is said during the opening sequences.

And don't get me started on the Vaults and Vault Tec.

Exhausting dialog options with most people give you the history if you are willing to listen through it. The wiki is also good.
