When a new pope is voted in, they throw the votes in a fireplace with a certain mixture of things so there's white smoke from the smokestack. If there isn't because the votes are equal or something, they make it black smoke and then vote again. Or something.

No, they do the smoke thing after the votes are counted. The smoke is to inform all the people outside and waiting for a signal.
