Ik this gonna sound dumb but can a ps3 overheat? because idk if i should buy another 360 or a ps3
User avatar #211 to #210 - covered (03/25/2013) [-]
Yeah it can if left on too long. It (like the 360) has a fan installed in it but that will only prolong the time of overheat

Don't get me wrong, I love the Xbox (I've had 5), HOWEVER, when a company actually installs lights on their hardware that only turn on to tell you what failure it is, it kinda sucks. They knew on day one that it wouldn't last, but nothing has been done to fix any of the issues...

my friends apartment burned to the ground recently. like 13 unit building gone. the only game systems that survived were the n64 and the snes. they built good units. I want a handheld version so bad..
#204 - cakefaceify (03/25/2013) [-]
The Xbox isn't all that advanced, it's essentially a decent gaming PC stripped to the essentials for gaming and nothing else, and stuck in a box.

back in my day if you wanted to play 4 players on a playstation you had to hook up a misshapen piece of plastic with extra controller ports

"Breaks for no apparent reason"
It breaks for a reason, and I'll explain it to you, ******** .
The present consoles are far more advanced than the old ones, so they use more power, and thus create more heat. Now, when a console creates a lot of heat, it sometimes melts through some of the crucial solders in the system. This will often detach things like the chips on the motherboard.

Not to mention, the older consoles did not give you feat, to set your console on its side, meaning that even if the solders were to melt, the chips would not pull away.

You see what I'm saying?
The older consoles were so inferior, that they didn't even have an easy way of killing themselves.

Much like how there were less suicides in the cave-man days.
#183 to #169 - stemoya (03/25/2013) [-]
That makes sense, but first.

If it's one of the most advanced consoles of all time, why isn't one of the advancements doing more to lessen this heat?

Second, no READILY apparent reason. I'm fairly sure this means there is nothing you can tell wrong with it without thoroughly studying it.

I did thumb you up, however, because I can't say your explanation was incorrect.
User avatar #218 to #183 - smittywrbmnjnsn (03/26/2013) [-]
Well, it does actually have systems that successfully prevent the overheat.
But, it requires the user to do a few things that: absolutely no one does

1. Keep any objects or walls at least a foot from the back at all times (for ventilation)
2. Make sure the vents are not clogged with dust
3. Make sure your console is laying FLAT

So, the problems are actually do to the user.
I've had a PlayStation 3 since it came out, and I've had absolutely no problems.
User avatar #191 to #183 - rploeger (03/25/2013) [-]
Well, i believe they mostly fixed it in the Slim version. I assume they simply didn't test it enough to see it coming.
User avatar #203 to #191 - kenwordo (03/25/2013) [-]
the issue is due to the **** metal they use to make them. the metal is what melts due to the heat
User avatar #227 to #203 - rploeger (03/26/2013) [-]
They used soldering tin, like almost any type of electronic appliance uses. What they should have done is add better cooling.
#182 to #169 - ExorArgus ONLINE (03/25/2013) [-]
You did kinda miss the operative word in the your quote "readily".
#184 to #182 - stemoya (03/25/2013) [-]
Hm. If only I hadn't spent five minutes typing up that comment, I would have gotten that before you. Haha...
User avatar #181 to #169 - WHATTHEPISSTRAINE ONLINE (03/25/2013) [-]
If it looks cool but breaks all the time its stupid,
If its old and never breaks it's good
Now tell me, why would you spend 200$ on a new 360 that breaks
when you could buy an old 64 for 30 bucks and a **** load of games
and have hours of entertainment for as long as you wish
More advanced is no excuse for cheap and fragile
User avatar #219 to #181 - smittywrbmnjnsn (03/26/2013) [-]
No, you're incorrect.

The system doesn't simply "break". You take a little care of your property, and it won't break.

What you're saying is "I'd rather have a rock, than a gun. Because my gun keeps jamming (even though I never clean the barrel)"
User avatar #226 to #219 - WHATTHEPISSTRAINE ONLINE (03/26/2013) [-]
No really its more so of, ide rather buy a range rover because it has more cup holders but dont want to pay to fix it ever five miles.
User avatar #230 to #226 - smittywrbmnjnsn (03/26/2013) [-]
You see. If you take a little care of your **** , you wouldn't have to "fix it ever five miles".
I haven't had any problems with my PS3, and I got it when it came out.
You see? I got the more advanced game system, and kept it just as strong as the older, less advanced ones.
User avatar #231 to #230 - WHATTHEPISSTRAINE ONLINE (03/27/2013) [-]
I never had problems with my ps3 either, I just air can it out occasionally to prevent over heating. MY little brother has gone through 3 x box 360s that get aired out on occasion as well.. Older x boxes were VERY cheaply made. Advanced has NOTHING to do with cheapskating and fragility
User avatar #232 to #231 - smittywrbmnjnsn (03/27/2013) [-]
Alright then.
#185 to #181 - stemoya (03/25/2013) [-]

No apparent reason? they over heat.
#163 to #162 - anonymous (03/25/2013) [-]
The thermal paste is applied far too thick, and thus the solder points tend to shift and overheat, yes. 90% of all red rings can be fixed by applying new paste.

My mom being the best mother ever and noticing I had a B- in Algebra took my Xbox 360, and threw it out the 5th story window, all the damage that was done to it led to a small crack in the plastic case around the aluminum shell inside. the Xbox still runs perfectly.

ive owned 5 xbox's and followed to a t xbox care instructions on 3 of them (broke in 3 months each) and internet care instructing and lasted 5 months for those. i then found out since i live in arizona dust is everywhere, so co-owning a fiberglass business i made a case that went around my xbox with built in micron filters plus two fans that plugged into a seperate outlet. that xbox lasted 2 years and is still running strong from what my best friend tells me (sold it work to much to really enjoy gaming) i still have the molds in storage so if anyones interested let me know?

the the xbox 360 S has a hardware update to prevent malfunctions... ive had my xbox since 05' and it still has yet to break...
User avatar #152 - byfidelsbeard (03/25/2013) [-]
That's because nowadays they make everything intentionally bad as to have the product stop working early. That way the consumers have to buy the same product more often. We have a huge Ecological footprint just because these people want more money.
User avatar #146 - Leopard (03/25/2013) [-]
Mine hasn't broken (yet) and I've had it for years.... so maybe take care of your **** ?
User avatar #154 to #146 - lolollo (03/25/2013) [-]
Same here. Only issues I've gotten have been from bumping the consule while playing a game, thus ruining the disk. And even that's more my own and my dickbutt roommate's fault than that of the console.

15 years later, still have my n64, and it still works every bit as good as it did when it was new. I think I'll have it for the rest of my life. If only I could figure out to what happened to my copy of goldeneye...oh well, **** it. I got Perfect Dark.

"One of the most advanced consoles of our time"
along with the PS3 and Wii, it didn't say it was "the" most advanced.
User avatar #206 to #199 - buriedstpatrick (03/25/2013) [-]
I would as far as to say the PS3 is the most advanced due to its needlessly complex architecture. The XBOX is basically a low end PC with an additional internet subscription fee.
