Why the heck is Printer Ink so damn expensive?

Honestly, what is it made of - Crude Oil? Squid Ink? I don't have a clue...

I worked at Epson years ago and they would sell the basic printers to the pc companies at a loss because people usually kept that free printer and then they made all their money back off the ink.

Well because so many things have to be factored into it, and the research and technology that goes into it as well.

" Inks must be formulated to withstand heating to 300 degrees, vaporization, and being squirted at 30 miles per hour, at a rate of 36,000 drops per second, through a nozzle one third the size of a human hair. After all that it must dry almost instantly on the paper."

I see why it is very expensive, now.
So it's the technology & research which is the 'main' price, and not necessarily the ink itself?

Well..if you want to think of it that way...but it's pretty much you get what you pay for.
