Inks more expensive than oil atm, it's actually cheaper to buy a new printer than buy replacement ink.

Depends on.
I buy replacement cartridges which cost 5-6 times less than the original ones

The printer in my house requires specific ink cartridges from the manufacturer which are like $80 a pack. It's insane.

Wow, that's really expensive

Mine is a Cannon, the cartridges are pretty small (~20ml colours and ~40ml black) but just cost about 12-15$ for the original ones.
But I have a chip resetter and so can re-use the chips of the original cartridges on the replacement ones which cost about 2-3$ each

Why the heck is Printer Ink so damn expensive?

Honestly, what is it made of - Crude Oil? Squid Ink? I don't have a clue...

I worked at Epson years ago and they would sell the basic printers to the pc companies at a loss because people usually kept that free printer and then they made all their money back off the ink.

You're better off buying a new printer every time you run out of ink.

Well because so many things have to be factored into it, and the research and technology that goes into it as well.

" Inks must be formulated to withstand heating to 300 degrees, vaporization, and being squirted at 30 miles per hour, at a rate of 36,000 drops per second, through a nozzle one third the size of a human hair. After all that it must dry almost instantly on the paper."

Oh.

I see why it is very expensive, now.
So it's the technology & research which is the 'main' price, and not necessarily the ink itself?

Because none of that cost goes towards paying for your teachers/tutors/lecturers/Lab operators/Demonstrators, equipment, school facilities, land, building costs, power or internet connection.

Of course not.
It's all about the printing.

Okay, so the cost of printing is 4000 tacos, but ONE student pays around 40,000 tacos.
40,000 tacos x 5,200 students = 208000000 tacos
Subtract the cost of printing, which is 4000 tacos, and you get 207996000 tacos
I think that 4000 tacos out of 207996000 would not make a massive difference.

A semester is about 4 months, so 4000 x 4 = 16000. 208000000 - 16000 is still 207984000 tacos left for the other ****.

Why would they make a sign discouraging printing just because it costs them a bit of money..? Don't students often need to print their typed up work in order to pass their courses?

I disagree. I found it most helpful to print out 6 slides per page and take notes directly on the slides. That way you don't have to try and match up your notes in your notebook to the slides on the computer later.
