Why the heck is Printer Ink so damn expensive?

Honestly, what is it made of - Crude Oil? Squid Ink? I don't have a clue...
#146 to #70 - John Cena (03/17/2013) [-]
I worked at Epson years ago and they would sell the basic printers to the pc companies at a loss because people usually kept that free printer and then they made all their money back off the ink.

Inkjet printer ink is more expensive per litre than crude oil...
#195 to #70 - deargodshutup (03/17/2013) [-]
actually, inkjet printer ink is more expensive per litre than crude oil,

and almost any other liquid as a matter of fact,

except unicorn seamen

seriously thought, ****** more expensive than crude oil

User avatar #87 to #70 - durkadurka ONLINE (03/17/2013) [-]
You're better off buying a new printer every time you run out of ink.
User avatar #74 to #70 - retributionthepimp (03/17/2013) [-]
Well because so many things have to be factored into it, and the research and technology that goes into it as well.

" Inks must be formulated to withstand heating to 300 degrees, vaporization, and being squirted at 30 miles per hour, at a rate of 36,000 drops per second, through a nozzle one third the size of a human hair. After all that it must dry almost instantly on the paper."
#78 to #74 - ilikecows **User deleted account** (03/17/2013) [-]
Oh.

I see why it is very expensive, now.
So it's the technology & research which is the 'main' price, and not necessarily the ink itself?
User avatar #82 to #78 - retributionthepimp (03/17/2013) [-]
Well..if you want to think of it that way...but it's pretty much you get what you pay for.

laser printer cost like 8 times cheaper to print a page compare to inkjet, its a shame an institution hasn't upgraded to laser printers.

Depends on.
I buy replacement cartridges which cost 5-6 times less than the original ones
User avatar #18 to #17 - toughactintinactin (03/17/2013) [-]
The printer in my house requires specific ink cartridges from the manufacturer which are like $80 a pack. It's insane.

refill the cartridges.

Good idea, i might just get another printer though aha
#19 to #18 - firesky (03/17/2013) [-]
Wow, that's really expensive

Mine is a Cannon, the cartridges are pretty small (~20ml colours and ~40ml black) but just cost about 12-15$ for the original ones.
But I have a chip resetter and so can re-use the chips of the original cartridges on the replacement ones which cost about 2-3$ each

Why would they make a sign discouraging printing just because it costs them a bit of money..? Don't students often need to print their typed up work in order to pass their courses?

No, not really. They don't need to print 50 page powerpoints, that's just a huge ******* waste.
User avatar #160 to #73 - brenton (03/17/2013) [-]
I disagree. I found it most helpful to print out 6 slides per page and take notes directly on the slides. That way you don't have to try and match up your notes in your notebook to the slides on the computer later.

University students in Britain only used to have to pay around £3,000 a year for tuition, totaling up to about £9,000. That rose recently to £9,000 a year (£27,000 total), my only guess is because the current government party are selfish and can't find any other way of getting that money other than charging poor students for it. If I was at uni and saw this poster I would think, how ******* dare they say I should think before I ink. What else am I paying for.

**** university tuition. Athletes receiving full scholarships instead of kids who may not be athletically talented but are very smart, new athletics buildings being built, and huge salaries for college presidents. I mean what the **** people. We don't value education very much in the country, obviously.
#167 to #125 - John Cena (03/17/2013) [-]
No, we value capitalism. Capitalism means that I can do whatever I want with your money as long as you willingly give it to me. So that's what they're gonna do. Be good capitalists.

You do realize that investing in sports is just that right? An investment?
User avatar #140 to #132 - theblacksheep (03/17/2013) [-]
Originally, yes. But now their are gender laws for college sports. Sorry women, no one wants to watch you play basketball, or softball. So they have to waste money on female athletic scholarships and female sports programs that will COST them money. Sports and school shouldn't be tied together, they should be separate.
User avatar #142 to #140 - quesocnkane (03/17/2013) [-]
Not at all.

1. College is a new level of sports. So you're saying sports should cease after high school?
2. What about the athletes that are really smart? What about me? I'm about to graduate with a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, but I wrestle. I'm not allowed to wrestle for my school?
3. Sports are an INVESTMENT for the school. They bring in money. They (most importantly) get the school's name out there. This is how they raise application rates. People know about the school through... lets hear it... sports.
4. Duh they wont invest in womens sports. Nobody likes watching it.
User avatar #144 to #142 - theblacksheep (03/17/2013) [-]
Not saying sports should stop after high school, just that they shouldn't be intermixed. You have something called "club" sports. You still compete at high levels and you represent your club instead of your school.
User avatar #179 to #144 - quesocnkane (03/17/2013) [-]
Comparing club sports to collegiate level athletes is like comparing stephen hawkings to Usain Bolt.
User avatar #198 to #179 - theblacksheep (03/17/2013) [-]
Club is another word for team, like soccer, they call them clubs. It's "club sports" because they aren't affiliated with the schools of the cities they are in. Not the intramurals clubs that are in American colleges.
User avatar #216 to #198 - quesocnkane (03/17/2013) [-]
I'm aware of what club sports are.

They still don't hold a candlelight to collegiate level athletes.
User avatar #165 to #125 - Dudedog (03/17/2013) [-]
It pisses me off they offer full rides to athletes because they well receive a return of the money they gave out faster from an athlete if their sports teams are great. Essentially, colleges are ****** up because in a capitalistic society, colleges have to be competitive economically as well, which in my opinion, is wrong because Americans need to be taught not bought.
