I don't own the game, so I can't really comment about whether it's good or not. Everything past here is what I've read around various message boards.
I have heard that it is pretty good once you get past the DRM, but the maximum city size is abysmally small and in 5-6 hours a new player can reach it.
I have also heard that a lot of features are loaded from their servers, and that pirated copies don't get everything included in the game.

If you want to pirate it, go ahead, but accept that you may not get the full game.
User avatar #62 to #19 - deathhardiv (03/16/2013) [-]
It's very difficult to play without pirating it at the moment to my knowledge, but I last checked up on it late 2 days ago.
Apparently it's possible now to go in to debug mode with some coding changes and play offline, but I don't know how easy that is.

Eh, Mythic's Warhammer Online can't really be blamed on EA. Mythic did a horrible job with their alpha testing and even beta tests. I almost got my tester status revoked for several of my bug reports because who ever was in charge of going over the reports flagged me as making false reports and accused me of "modifying" the client to get the bugs that several other testers had also managed to replicate.

While it is his opinion, I found it extremely insightful as to why piracy is not a black or white issue.
User avatar #36 to #35 - Neodude (03/16/2013) [-]
The unfortunate thing is that is, as you said, just an opinion. The thing is that piracy does not actually do any good, it only causes harm. There is nothing you can say that is good about piracy. It hasn't pushed developers to move towards less DRM, and sorry to tell you, but it does cost jobs. I say this having had discussions about it with members from the industry, including a producer from within EA. Those higher up don't take pay cuts to offset loses to the company from piracy, the guys lower down get axed.
User avatar #39 to #36 - applelemon (03/16/2013) [-]
Well, in this case, you could say that it allows you to play the game.
User avatar #41 to #39 - Neodude (03/16/2013) [-]
That is one thing, i never experienced the issue with not joining any servers. i got on and was playing an hour after launch, and went for about 7 hours straight, so i really can't say anything positive nor negative towards it.
User avatar #44 to #41 - applelemon (03/16/2013) [-]
Well, I can't speak from firsthand experience as I don't own the game, but I have heard many stories of people not being able to connect.
User avatar #47 to #44 - Neodude (03/16/2013) [-]
That one was not even an issue with the DRM, it was EA and Maxis underestimated how huge the launch needed to actually be.

#5 to #4 - jakatackka (03/15/2013) [-]
DRM has required that you must be online at all times... to play a mostly-offline game. On top of that, they didn't make their servers capable of actually hosting this traffic, so everyone got screwed with a game that they can't play
#6 to #5 - jakeattack (03/15/2013) [-]
well **** , is this gonna be for all future games? or what.
#7 to #6 - jakatackka (03/15/2013) [-]
If they can, yes. It ensures that no one is pirating the game. However, people with poor or no internet connections are screwed, such as myself.
#8 to #7 - jakeattack (03/15/2013) [-]
well thats ******* gay, only EA games i hope!:/ or maybe we will just find away around it **** that the more limits you put on people, the more they will fight back.

If you don't buy the game simply because of the DRM, then you don't care enough. It's not THAT huge of a problem (for some it might, but most people shouldn't have a problem being connected to the net). It's a great game, I'dd say you should buy it. ANd if the DRM is such a pain in the ass for you, download the mod that let you play offline, and stop bitching.

(spare me for all the "they punish those who buy it" etc, it wont give you a better experience of the game.. Also, I agree DRM is **** , but I dont care enough not to buy a great game.
User avatar #11 to #10 - listerthepessimist (03/16/2013) [-]

Have you seen Civitas on Kickstarter?
#97 to #2 - drinpa ONLINE (03/16/2013) [-]
I'm not saying that DRM is good or anything, I think with SimCity's **** launch it's been a pretty big failure in this case, but when entering those codes before you could play a game first came out people threw a fit too, and now that's the norm. Buying games via steam and such kind of works around that because it enters it for you, but yeah.

TL;DR: People always complain about change, but prepare for this to be the new norm in a few years, even with complaints from customers.

My friends and I wanted to play with eachother, which sounded like it would be really cool. So I started a private region, and got around 8 of us playing. It seemed pretty great, and then we all logged off to go to sleep. Except Austin. Austin played another 4 ******* hours without us. So when I log on in the morning, I'm pleasantly surprised to find that he already has some grand utopia up and running, with an abundance of utilities and services, so he ends up just selling all his power, water, and sewage to us, along with sending us his police, garbage trucks, firefighters, and ambulances. Everyone else thought this was pretty sweet, because we didn't have to waste space and money on the buildings ourselves. Fast forward a week, and everyone has nearly perfect cities. We actually managed to get everything balanced and working well. Then I log in the other day, and it's ******* anarchy in the U.K. Apparantly a giant lizard thing from Spore attacked Austin's city, and took out his city hall, losing all the upgrades. Meaning all utilities ceased to function. On top of this, the damn beast took out the nuclear power plants, and then meteors crashed into his city as well, conveniently taking out his industrial district, putting a sizable chunk of the whole regions sims out of work. So I log in to see that I have no utilities, no police, no nothing. All of my sims are now uneducated because a university shutting down for a day can somehow do that, and everything is on fire. All because ONE city got ****** . It was instant apocalypse. And then NO ONE ELSE COULD PLAY until he logged in and rebuilt his city.
