did you know that hammering a copper nail into a tree can kill it, those copper coated coins (like the 2p) probably killed it.

don't underestimate tree's there tough ******* , fair play though the coins could interrupt sap flow, yet still trees can grow around things and survive though (don't know why I'm replying to an anon).

Wasn't it something like people used to put them in there for good luck and if you took it out you were cursed?

I like how people are calling them idiots for believing in that still. I don't think they really do, I mean come on, we still throw coins into wells and fountains!

This oddly disturbs me, just in the mildest way, and I have no idea why.

Whether it works or not, before people go bashing those who have hammered a coin into this tree. Think for a second. Maybe it's just the subconscious comfort they are going after when making a wish to the tree. Sure it may just be superstition but come on... it's like telling your closest friend a troubling problem or secret. Most of the time you feel better after getting it out right?

A few cents for a moment or so of relief? What's so wrong with that?

>Remove all the coins to kill all the idiots who believe in this stupid superstition...
Meaning anyone who thought this believed in the tree's power as well...
User avatar #59 to #53 - chuca (03/14/2013) [-]
1) since it's just superstition it wouldn't work obviously

2) it meant whoever takes the coin out dies, so you'd just kill yourself if it did

3) anyone who believed in this died long before your grandpa was a sperm in his dad's balls( a very long time ago)

"Stupid" or not, it was probably just comforting to those who were making the wish. Like telling a close friend a secret or a personal problem. Whether it was solved or not, I would think it's the subconscious comfort they are after.
