Why not just keep your ps3?
User avatar #393 - madlh (03/13/2013) [-]
The reason they are not including backwards compatibility (hardware based) for the older systems is because the ps3's hardware would be insanely difficult to emulate on the hardware architecture that the ps4 has. To be able to emulate the ps3 correctly you would need a ps3 built in to the ps4 like what they did with the ps2 when the ps3 first came out. When the ps3 came out you were buying a ps2 and a ps3. But, to reduce production costs they removed the ps2 hardware. If they did the same with the ps4 the price would probably increase enough for people to complain. Sony is trying to keep the price for consumers lower this time around. If you watched the whole conference you will remember that they mentioned cloud based BC. Now depending on how they implement this is how it will turn out. If you have to re-purchase titles then its going to flop. But if they manage to make it so the 'cloud' recognizes the disk in the system and then accesses the cloud version to be played, then they might be on to something.
User avatar #440 to #393 - theberserker (03/13/2013) [-]

#592 to #393 - underlois ONLINE (03/13/2013) [-]
So what you were trying to say at the end is that if our PS3 games get saved onto the "cloud" we could then download them again to the PS4 using our PSN accounts? Cus that would be extremely ******* amazing.
User avatar #689 to #592 - madlh (03/13/2013) [-]
What im trying to say is this. Lets say you insert a ps3 disk into the ps4. The ps4 itself cannot run the game. So you start up the cloud based BC service. It will recognize the disk in the system and then look it up in its server and start it. Of course there will still probably be a service fee even if it is implemented that way, probably part of the PS+. You cant expect them to run the cloud servers for free you know.

I miss having trashed my ps1, but I got PSXE running to replay my good old Parasite Eve and Final Fantasy 7/8/9.

I do plan on getting a ps3 now when the price drops, but I can't decide between it and an Xbox because of exclusives (MGS4/Rumble Roses XX/Halo/etc)

That said, +1 for not being another "GRAPHICS" gamer.
#486 to #481 - TheCanadianPatriot (03/13/2013) [-]
The pic says it all with your choices. PS also has some decent exclusives, best example I have, the God of War series.

Also, thank you for the +1 because I'm not a "GRAPHICS gamer" . Honestly in my opinion people who refuse to play games because of their graphics aren't real gamers. To me, a real gamer will play any game of any genre or any generation.
User avatar #490 to #486 - Zedotelhado (03/13/2013) [-]
Because I live in Poortugal and even with the price drop, getting 1 console is about 50% of my monthly wage, then games, it's a big expense.

Cheers, we're a dying breed. I'm still on the market for some obscure PS2 titles, that if I showed to anyone today would be met with "hurr durr no graphics unplayable" (I mean of course the mighty Drakengards 1 & 2 and FF:DoC)
User avatar #495 to #490 - TheCanadianPatriot (03/13/2013) [-]
The Drakengards are amazing, but the first one is far better in my opinion. Never played this FF: DoC so I can't judge. I have a pile of other obscure games that I haven't gotten around to playing yet. But two that I have that I recommend are Draken: The Ancients' Gates and Champions of Norath: Realms of Everquest. The Champions of Norath has a sequal called Champions: Return to Arms, but I haven't been able to find a copy.

User avatar #607 to #516 - mjjrussell **User deleted account** (03/13/2013) [-]
My guess would be they don't want to take away from the new pokemon games. If you want to play pokemon on the 3DS then you have to buy the newer games, which cost more.

I'm no expert here, I'm just speculating, but the technology that reads the discs and the discs have changed. also, the expense of the new machine is already very high and they wont sell any if its too high so putting in old technology is not in their best interest or in the consumers really. Just my attempt at rationalizing it.

It's to do with the hardware architecture, PS3 is physically different to any other console on the market as it uses cell architecture. (a group of processors doing everything) where as all other consoles (and most PC's) use the dedicated processor model, where by an individual CPU and GPU can work independently from each other and each do what they are good at.

Cell architecture caused some major headaches for Sony when the PS3 was first released because no publishers wanted to have to deal with the weird hardware.

So Sony are just biting the bullet with the PS4 and switching back to a more traditional PC architecture to save them any more headaches in the future.

To get backwards compatibility to work with the PS4 for PS3 games would be very, very difficult, its like telling two different people they are the same person, and that they have to operate as 6 individuals. MIND **** .
