Yeah, but this is 80's America. And everyone knows that no American, not even the Joker, would collaborate with a dirty fascist.

...That's a good point. He is in the Dark Knight, since we can tell from his accent. But apart from that we've no idea.

I've never really thought about it before. He could be Russian. That'd be funny.

I don't really care, but mixing patriotic and political issues into superhero world seems to me kinda disturbing. Batman pointed this out in one of the comics, telling that Superman too often agreed to do government's bidding and became a joke.

I agree with beeterror but with the exception of superheroes who are meant to be patriotic. Superman is of no real nationality so when he does the bidding of Governments rather than does what is right it smacks of hypocrisy.

However, Captain America was built from the first day to be an american-only hero. That is part of the reason why I hate him in the comics as much as I do. He's either insufferable or misplaced most of the time depending on how patriotic the writer makes him.

However in the movie they remedied that really well. He's an American through and through but it's because he comes from a different time where that was much more acceptable. He also never rubs it in people's faces. He is a humble man who has clear-cut morals and loyalties but it's clear that his loyalties are to his country and what he believes it represents rather than the current government of said country.

Point is: Patriotism can be done right, it just generally isn't.

Uh... yeah? So?

In the comic books he has well over 60 years to adjust to the way things have changed. The fact that he didn't not only makes him stubborn and unlikeable but also makes him an idiot.

Compare him with the character from the movie who has the change thrust upon him and therefore his antiquated viewpoints are not only much more understandable but much more forgivable. He isn't a relic of a bygone age, he is a man out of his time and is having a lot of trouble coping with the change, hence he himself is not changing. He is keeping his beliefs alive because he didn't have time to accept that they were no longer relevant.

I don't know what I expected.

It's actually ironic, because Captain America and Superman's positions with government are somewhat contrasted.
In Civil War, Captain America fights an act in which super heroes are forced to hand over their identities to the authorities and undergo proper training. In the process he ends up in direct combat with Iron Man, who becomes something of a spearhead for this act.

In The Dark Knight Returns (and the sequel), Superman has become something of a pawn with the government, and does what they ask of him, believing it's the only way to achieve a peaceful compromise with heroes and normal people. Batman ends up fighting Superman, knowing that the way he wants to achieve freedom for his doing and freedom for his peers will always be restraint by Superman.
