I honestly respect plants more than animals or people...

They're a peaceful life form.

Vegans and vegetarians are the biggest hypocrites I've ever seen in my life. "Meat is ****** , but plants are ok!" Why? Because it doesn't scream and bleed everywhere when you tear it from it's roots?

A tree is a hell of a lot more useful than a chicken. The chicken would probably live about 5 years while a tree can go though hundreds... supplying oxygen, lumber, paper etc...

**** Vegans. If you can find me a vegan who doesn't eat ANY LIVING THING. NO PLANTS. NO ANIMALS. Then I'll listen to what they have to say...

Plants deserve so much more respect than they really do..

Did you know they're capable of thinking and communicating?

True story: A man was ******** in a floral shop once, and the flowers released a pheromone into the air when the killer walked into the store under police investigation. They actually recognized him.
User avatar #82 to #73 - inbardo (03/05/2013) [-]
I'm sorry, dude.

I really liked your line of thinking, but i must disagree of that history.

Plants can't recognize anything. They don't have sensorial organs, like eyes, ears, noses... They don't have a brain or a nervous system.

they are alive and I agree with you that saving animals and kill plants in the name of empathy is pure hypocrisy.

But we can't just be scientifically incorrects to sustain this.
User avatar #86 to #82 - oottovann (03/05/2013) [-]
Plants are a different form of life. They breathe, drink and eat way more differently than anything else.

Ever heard of the venus fly trap? It recognizes things incredibly... they can taste, feel and smell... There are plants out there that are way beyond the average blade of grass...
User avatar #109 to #86 - grunklebum (03/05/2013) [-]
Where's your evidence that plants can taste and smell?
User avatar #91 to #86 - inbardo (03/05/2013) [-]
I know, dude.

But they don't have a brain. They don't have a nervous system. I'm almost sure they don't have even neurons (but i must check this information)

I know you have a point and you must defend it. But we are talking about science.

I wish you are speaking the truth. I really wish that, someday, we'll discover the way how the plants process information about the world around them.

but now, with the information we have, we can only conclude that plants are not aware of the world around them. For the simple reason that you can not be a mind without a brain.

They have mechanical responses to external stimuli, but they are mechanical, and not the result of a conscious decision.

I'm sorry, man. I wish i'm wrong, but we can't deny the truth.
User avatar #94 to #91 - oottovann (03/05/2013) [-]
Not aware of the world around them............?

User avatar #97 to #94 - inbardo (03/05/2013) [-]
Yeah, they don't.

Man, i understand your frustration.

A venus fly trap actually works a lot like a bear trap. It's got a pressure sensitive trigger (though I'm unsure as to the specifics), so sayeth the biology lessons I went to.
User avatar #89 to #87 - oottovann (03/05/2013) [-]
It can taste and smell to see if it's either a bug, or just a stick... it knows the difference.

User avatar #76 to #73 - Kaiserlome (03/05/2013) [-]
That story isnt true. And no plants do not not have ******* feelings LOL you moron. They do secrete chemicals to communicate but that doesn't mean they think, they are just having biological responses to biological chemicals.
User avatar #85 to #76 - inbardo (03/05/2013) [-]
a "feel" is a biological response to a biological chemical, even in humans.
User avatar #92 to #85 - Kaiserlome (03/05/2013) [-]
No it isn't. There's loads of senses people have that we don't consciously experience. It's suffering that matters. We assume animals can suffer show signs of it, theres absolutely no reason to think that plants can suffer. They have no need to.
Sense =/= Feeling
User avatar #96 to #92 - inbardo (03/05/2013) [-]
I'm not talking about the event that triggered the chemical reaction. I'm talking about the chemical reaction itself.

A "feeling" is a chemical reaction in your brain, which releases different combinations of substances in the body according to each situation.

A stressful situation is stressful because your brain identifies and thus emits a certain combination of substances.

Any feeling is pure chemistry.
User avatar #100 to #96 - Kaiserlome (03/05/2013) [-]
It's electricity not chemistry. Neurotransmitters just allow certain signals to pass through neurons. How this produces conscious experience is unknown. So no, a feeling is not 'chemical', a feeling is a conscious experience, caused by electricity, allowed by chemicals.
User avatar #105 to #100 - inbardo (03/05/2013) [-]
if you dissect everything up to that point, then yes, it is electricity.

But electricity is nothing more than moving electrons, so is physics.

But electrons are formed by particles called quarks, so it's Particle Physics.

But actually, we're talking about a general event, and not the concepts that originate this information. No need to be so specific.

Then the electricity that you mention is only a catalyst for a chemical reaction.

And this chemical reaction is part of human biology.

And then we return to my initial argument:

a "feel" is a biological response to a biological chemical, even in humans.
User avatar #111 to #105 - Kaiserlome (03/05/2013) [-]
"Feeling" describes the conscious experience produced by the process, not the process. It's cause is chemical. Feelings in of themselves are not chemical.
User avatar #113 to #111 - inbardo (03/05/2013) [-]
Ok, so why this events in humans or another animal are described by "feelings" and in plants they are "biological responses"?

Both are biological responses, but in animals we call this a "feel"? It's just semantics?
User avatar #119 to #113 - Kaiserlome (03/05/2013) [-]
Because plants don't have the conscious experience. They just have the chemicals. We dont know exactly why we need conscious experience but we know they are needed for social interaction and caused by the brain. Plants don't have brains, nor do they have social interactions. There's no sign that they consciously experience anything, let alone experience similar things to humans (pain, sadness, fear). It was a bit semantical but I've established what I meant now.
User avatar #121 to #119 - inbardo (03/05/2013) [-]
So, if the sensation is there, but you can't name it, or connet it to some external experience who triggered the sensation, this sensation is not a feeling?

To be classified like "feeling", the sensation must be part of a concious experience?
User avatar #127 to #121 - Kaiserlome (03/05/2013) [-]
No I'm talking about feelings as in happiness, sadness, worry, things like that. Things that are conscious experiences.
I think you call sensations what I call feelings and I call sensations what you call feelings lol
#129 to #127 - inbardo (03/06/2013) [-]
