I wonder if such a bill is really worth anything like that. I mean, will a bank or store take it like that?

I work in a bank, we wouldnt take it, and if it got mixed in with a large deposit then when we did catch it we'd brick it with other "misfits" and shipped to the Federal Reserve to be destroyed. :(

Yes, it will, so long as there is one full serial number and part of the other along with at least 2/3rds of the bill.

Half of the bill, not 2/3s.

I'm pretty sure that it's 2/3 so that you can't tear all your bills in half and have double money.

http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/consumerawareness/a/replacemoney.htm

"Not mutilated but damaged currency includes any bill that is CLEARLY more than one-half of the original bill, and does not require any special examination or investigation to determine its value. Examples of non-mutilated bills include those that are badly soiled, dirty, defaced, disintegrated, limp, torn or otherwise "worn out.""
