According to people on the internet, there is a conversation that goes something like this..

Thane: " . . . ., Siha"
FShepard: "I'm sorry, what did you just call me? I think my translator just glitched."
User avatar #113 to #108 - hanabro (03/03/2013) [-]
Talking to Thane. If I remember correctly, you only get the line with a female Shepard, and the word Thane uses is "Siha." He just tells you, "Someday, I'll tell you what it means."

Each omni tool is equipped with a translator. In one of the games you can overhear a conversation where some people complain about a turian who refuses to turn on his translator.

I think that was the games salesman on the Citadel, complaining when Batarians refuse to use auto-translators.

User avatar #65 to #29 - Arkkath (03/03/2013) [-]
On my first playthrough of ME3, I played it without importing my ME2 saved game just because I wanted to see the differences between the two and I ended up choosing the Geth as well (didn't know that Tali would suicide).

Second playthrough I imported my perfect game from ME2 and things went much smoother. The only thing I didn't like was that the romance scenes with Tali are kind of lame compared to other characters.

Still one of my favourite characters from the series though.

i manged to save both but if it came down to it, i would choose the geth, they are more useful, and quarians were dicks to them
User avatar #46 to #44 - redrex ONLINE (03/03/2013) [-]
how do you save both? it came down to either give the geth free will, which kills the quarians, or don't, which allows the quarian fleet to crush the geth

you gotta have nearly full paragon to save both.

also if you read up on the ingame codex all guns have a magazine of solid metal, the gun chips a very small amount of metal of the top then shoots the shred of metal at incredible speeds.

hence one magazine can last a few thousand rounds of firing, so with this logic you can safely bet on the crew changing their mags at the end of each mission. hence "infinite ammo"
#54 - anon (03/03/2013) [-]
No, they can understand each other because of universal translators in their omnitools, which, (SURPRISE) works by suspending miniaturized processors and fabricators in a MASS EFFECT FIELD!!!!
User avatar #71 - rbpwn (03/03/2013) [-]
The Salarians and the Asari Created Translators when they met, and have been adapting them since (From what I can piece together)
The Translators are either cranial implants standardized by Colonies, Spacer crews and the Armies of each sentient race

The Vorcha probably don't need them, though
User avatar #73 to #71 - spankyy (03/03/2013) [-]
why do you say the Vorcha probably don't need them?
User avatar #74 to #73 - rbpwn (03/03/2013) [-]
Most Vorcha that anyone ever meets are trained by The Blood Pack or Stow Aways on ships landing on their homeworld

The defining aspect of Vorcha are their ability to adapt to nearly any situation in the 20 year lives

From birth, a Vorcha could grow gills to breath underwater in about 10 years if it constantly has to swim for extendd periods of time, so language shouldn't be hard for them at all

The Blood Pack literally beat the Vocha into Soldiers, so the Vorcha have plenty of time to adapt to Krogan Language while being yelled at

The Stow away also have plenty of time to adapt to what ever language is being used on the ship while hiding

At least that's my theory
User avatar #75 to #74 - spankyy (03/03/2013) [-]
ahh
User avatar #4 - slandersalamander (03/02/2013) [-]
Read the codices. They have translators in their suits.
User avatar #37 - motherfuckingkenji (03/02/2013) [-]
Mass effect can sort of be likened to The Force... which I guess makes biotics Jedis.
The hyper-lightspeed thing is because the Ezo (Element Zero) in the core can reduce the ship's mass down to that of a... very tiny object... so yes, E=mc^2. They produce enough energy to propel that very tiny object faster than light, now that it's so much simpler.
The guns, however, do not have infinite ammo because of a mass effect field or whatever. Instead, the ammo is a small block of metal inside the gun. Each time the trigger is pulled, a computer in the gun calculates how much of that block to shave off based on distance to the target and the target's shielding. More advanced computers can also take into account wind-speed and humidity and such. The guns propel the shots like a railgun.

TL:DR FICTIONAL CANONICAL SCIENCE BITCH!
User avatar #42 to #37 - fargone (03/03/2013) [-]
Mass Effect stuff was just Bioware needing magic in their game because just being a shooter would be kinda boring.
User avatar #63 to #42 - srskate (03/03/2013) [-]
I disagree. They took a simple physics principle and ******* engineered it to realist standpoints.

User avatar #143 to #63 - fargone (03/03/2013) [-]
I just meant from a gameplay perspective. It is pretty impressive that Bioware managed to come up with one thing that allowed them to cover FTL travel, how their guns work, pseudo-magic and a bunch of neat scientific applications all while keeping it semi-realistic.

the codecs in the first game explained a lot of theese. if they were introduced late in the game, it would be the worst deux ex machina ever, but in the first game, it was brilliant. shame they had to retcon parts of it for the seccond game, that ruined lots of my enjoyment.
#6 to #5 - pentol ONLINE (03/02/2013) [-]
akso, the infinite ammo isn't infinitem it's just close to it, because the guns use a small amount of metal for every shot, which is accellerated by railgun principles, and then has it's mass increased by the EZO
User avatar #19 to #6 - Bion (03/02/2013) [-]
The "clip" is actually a good sized block of metal (whatever kind they use), and the gun shaves off a tiny wedge, which it then shoots. This causes a lot of friction, and hence why guns have "heat" in the first game. In the second and third, "thermal clips" are used to drain the heat immediately, without having to cool down.

I thought this idea was ******* ingenious.
User avatar #62 to #19 - srskate (03/03/2013) [-]
I thought the idea was stupid.

There is never a situation that calls for a sniper that can't fire.
#145 to #62 - pentol ONLINE (03/03/2013) [-]
and for some reason the biotic implants now couldn't handle firing up powers in rapid succession. while this made everything more balanced and made sure you couldn't just kill bosses with 2 biotics blasting every power they had in 2 secs, it also made biotics super boring, and it forced you to play gears of war, instead of "dragon-age:origins-in-space"
User avatar #148 to #145 - srskate (03/03/2013) [-]
