I'm sorry but these definitions are entirely related to someone's opinion on the matter. "Cool stuff" could be anything. I create and fix websites, collect video games, and know nothing about automobiles. By that logic, I'm an internet geek, gaming nerd, and car dork. The words would have to be applied to the subject at had. This would actually work if not for the fact that the first two are used relatively interchangeably, and the last, to my knowledge, hasn't been popular since Ed, Edd, 'n' Eddy. It makes no sense.

I agree. There's also the whole realm of scientific or book knowledge, which is often given the label of "nerdiness". I'm kind of used to nerd/geek being interchangeable.

However, it's still ridiculous when people try to use "nerd" or "geek" as an offensive term. It's like calling someone gay - if they're gay, it's not offensive, if they're straight it doesn't change the fact they're not attracted to the same gender. It's especially weird when someone uses, say "nerd", when someone does really well academically. It's like saying "YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD CAUSE YOU'RE SMARTER THAN ME AND YOU DID BETTER".
