What can you do? When your culture tells you your non-virgin daughter is now worthless? Well, you can do what they are doing, and fight back. Yes, in our eyes this is pretty ****** up. However they've lived with this for years, decades, centuries even; and now they realize that perhaps their culture may be wrong in some aspects. And that their daughter, their flesh-'n-blood are worth more than her virginity.

In these countries they blame the girls after rape, claiming that the rape could have been prevented if the girls had not "tempted" the guy

User avatar #84 to #53 - slyve (02/25/2013) [-]
That's what feminists keep yelling. But comparing it to what happens in those countries is stupid. Rape is still illegal, even if women would run around naked, and the rapist will still be punished.

When was the last time your heard of a rape victim being stoned to death by a mob of angry people where you live?

If I may be of service to those wondering why we see stories lined up like this, I have an explanation for you:

As with alcohol, gambling, sex, etc., reading about the lives of celebrities help people temporarily escape from their problems. By reading about them, they temporarily (or for some deluded people, permanently) feel as though they are a part of their lives and live (somewhat) vicariously through them.

Another reason is that it could be a vice. The reason this one eats up news feeds is because its big money. Why is it big money? The reason is that ordinary folk (or devote some of their time) to read about these people. Why? See above paragraph.

Unfortunately, twitter and Facebook (seems) to determine, whether directly or indirectly) what we see in the news, which is another reason why this happened. If you'd like to start seeing more important stories at the top of the news feed, start talking about them, eh?

I'd like to point out a few things before I conclude here:
1) Is this pointless and inane? Of course it is. Most vices tend to be.
2) Does this deserve a spot directly beneath the story above it? Of course not. This picture is basically saying that society cares as much as a family torn apart after a traumatic event to be worth just slightly more than knowing the everyday activities of someone who is famous for seemingly no reason involving talent and because people (mostly guys I assume) like staring at her supposedly big ass. However, this goes hand in hand with point two in the sense that you could make any vice sound this dumb.
3) While I do believe there should be good and cheerful news to offset the bad that we see, no one person is so important that their mundane activities should get a #2 spot on a hottest topics feed.

TL;DR A reason exists for this behavior, and it's as stupid as the people who care about the lives of celebrities that aren't being paid to do so.

MFW the media.

The only good thing to come of Kim Kardashian that I'm aware of is Kim Kierkegaardashian. It's a twitter feed where a guy mixes her kinds of post with 19th century philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. You wind up with tweets like:
"Awww Kanye won 3 Grammys!! That makes a total of 21!!! Sooo proud!! But it avails nothing, being only a higher and more glittering illusion." or
"Want a red carpet look for New Year’s? Clothe yourself in pain."

The mentality is that her virginity, and therefore her value as in individual to be married, is gone. That makes her a tramp. Don't ask me why it's her fault that she was overpowered and raped, but she is a disgrace to her family for being such a slut and therefore must be killed as the ultimate punishment.

Makes perfect "sense."

I do agree that many of their customs are outlandish and dated but to say that an entire culture should be assimilated and westernized is to go a little far. Pakistan has a rich heritage and culture and if America was to try to assimilate that into ours is would be just as historically embarassing as residential schools in canada. Unless you mean more how like immigration works now, where people are free to practie their customs, traditions and religion, but all within the confines of our law. So things like being killed because you were raped dont happen.
#142 to #136 - anon (02/25/2013) [-]
(This is the same anon btw.)

I never said their culture should be assimilated. However, I don't think their barbarism should go unchecked, either. There are real people living in those countries ruled by horrible people who enforce the misogyny in that country that has been going on for far too long.

What I would like to see happen to Pakistan is for their government to be overthrown and then rebuilt by the people so they can have a chance to truly flourish without the baggage of their archaic laws.
#152 to #142 - punkrockdude (02/26/2013) [-]
while that would be great for Pakistan and similar nations, I can't see it happening anytime soon. There are too many supporters of the Islamist ideals (many of who are wealthy), not to mention that these regimes are backed by groups like the Taliban and al Qaida. Also, ever since the the american screw ups of putting cruel dictators in the place of dictators who were simply anti-America, Americas hands are tied
User avatar #147 to #142 - randumbgamer (02/25/2013) [-]
Oh okay, i completely agree with that then. I often associate the idea of "westernizing" with assimilation because it usually in terms of a country that is drastically different from western culture, but i realize thats not what you meant

User avatar #160 to #136 - SubjectThree (02/26/2013) [-]
Pakistan was originally created after India was granted its freedom. It was supposed to be a haven where muslim fundamentalists could go to if they didn't like the new Indian govermnent and its less-than-stellar honoring of muslim customs.

Suddenly India doesn't seem so bad.

Not really, i was just using immigration as an example. Im not even american and more then anything i was advocationg the protection of their culture and customs. But okay then, whatever you say
