I remember seeing this picture during basic training. The guy who got shot and in the second picture was a Staff Sergeant. Basically, they didn't lie down supressive fire on the enemy before trying to go in drag him to cover. Since that wasn't done, the enemy could clearly get a shot off on the Sergeant. And thus, he became another casualty. So whereas most people see a picture of a marine who was willing to give his life to save a comrade, anyone who knows the story behind this picture sees a marine who, had they followed proper procedure to saving your wounded in the battlefield, did something that was considered dumb and now his squad is a man down.

Because sometimes life is cruel and in a moment of pain and weakness we don't think. Soldiers are still people, and people make stupid decisions in an emotional situation. If you saw Full Metal Jacket, they explain that this is a common guerilla tactic. Wound one guy, shoot whoever comes to help them.

This is so fake. People falling for shit like this is why FJ is widely regarded as being full of fucking retarded little twelve year olds.

Actually... this is quiet real. This was my example during basic training about a year ago at Ft. Jackson. This was used during a lesson on providing cover fire with wounded battle buddies in the combat zone.

He didn't have to waste his life to save him.
If I was his commander I would have told him to stay.

A soldiers first priority is to be a soldier, not a hero. If you have an 8 man section (or squad, whichever takes your fancy) and a man goes down, and a man goes out to save him and gets shot, that drops 8 men, immediately down to 6. And you endanger the lives of everybody else, 1 man is not worth the life of 7 others. If you need to get a man out you do it AFTER the fire fight is one. The whole point of a re-org after a contact.

Here's a funny question: How about convincing your bud not to join the army, not to go to some strange land for shady reasons, and just watch It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia whilst drinking a Guiness and rejoice of your good health and sanity? A little less costly than laying down your life, and a more assured result.

well hers why. if there were no volunteer military, i assume your american and apologise if im wrong, your anti military ass would be forced to fight. if you want to hate something about war hate those who make the decision to declare war not the people willing to fight so you dont have to

You ever seen a combat photographer? They get less body armor and such than soldiers, and they're usually not in peak physical condition, unless they're an official military photographer. A lot of civilian photographers go out into combat zones. Their job is to record what happens. And besides, if one armed soldier can't do anything to rescue one guy, what's a photographer gonna do to rescue two guys?
