well see, trees take in carbon dioxide (a major greenhouse gas that leads to the phenomena called global warming) and let out oxygen.
if this lamp uses more carbon dioxide, then it helps eliminate a potentially large proportion of the carbon dioxide in the air, and thus decreasing global warming.

As a result, i will be much happier in my current habitat (called Florida), where it sometimes reaches 90 degrees in the winter.

The sad thing about this is that if they were to try and make these commercially, electric companies would just buy all of the patents for these lamps and not use them, then it would go back to business as usual.

Apparently this is also what happened many years ago with some engine patent that would have drastically increased fuel efficiency (by something like 100 mpg). The oil industry bought and buried the patent.
#319 to #248 - anon (02/23/2013) [-]
Dude. There have been several types of engines that get CRAZY good gas mileage. In Europe, good gas mileage is considered around 70mpg (not a hybrid) last time I checked. If the government didn't interfere (they have emission laws saying there can only be so much emission per gallon of gas used, even if it's 20x more mpg and only 2x more emissions per gallon, that would still be 10x less total emissions than modern engines, but still illegal [they do this to keep us buying gas, which half the price of is taxes]) and patents weren't around, average mileage would probably be around 200mpg.

Finally we can get rid of trees and replace them with superior technology. That **** is old. It was in serious need of innovation.

Now all we have to do is find an alternative habitat for mammals that live in trees and we are set. Synthetic paper is already here...but I guess I don't have a problem with people who find them pleasing to look at keeping them around.... begrudgingly ....I suppose....grrgghhhh.

Just the other day I read a study that states Trees are not our primary consumers of C02, nor are they our crucial Oxygen producers.

Although trees do in fact consume toxic C02 and produce life giving Oxygen, its almost a closed system. Whatever Oxygen they produce during the day, the consume again during the night. There is little breathable excess for another organism to breathe.

Smaller plant organisms though, such as algae and phytoplankton, have extremely short life cycles with blazing fast growth spikes. This means that ounce for ounce, pound for pound, they consume many many times more C02 and produce many many times more oxygen than any comparable biomass of tree.

Trees aren't keeping us alive. They produce just enough air for themselves. Its the slimy stuff in muddy ponds and the vast green slicks in the ocean that keep everything on this planet from suffocating.

Fascinating, no?

Since when do trees take in oxygen? Photosynthesis absorbs water and carbon dioxide, oxygen is a waste product...

Plants use both photosynthesis (Use CO2, produce O2) and cellular respiration(Use O2, create CO2), as opposed to most animals which only use cellular respiration.
User avatar #114 to #112 - brettyoke (02/22/2013) [-]
I had no idea there was any part of a tree that used cellular respiration. Enlighten me.

"usable energy"

First off, glucose turns into storage for a cell, it doesn't need to be usable energy. The glucose is later used to produce ATP and NADPH (partially, as most of that is done in photosynthesis) which is energy for the cell. That's putting it very basically.

Either your links or my biology teacher are incorrect.
User avatar #339 to #139 - antistar (02/23/2013) [-]
Plant cells have mitochondria, which use cellular respiration.

Most parts of the world actually have longer days than nights, so there's a little bit of an excess of O2

But what if we have a problem with CO2 and we're just killing off humans to make shopping malls, so then everyone freaks out because humans aren't making enough CO2 and the post-apocalyptic movies now deal with CO2 shortage....
