The thing was the older shows were more risky and clever. Take this show (Samurai Jack) it was a kids show constantly showing a warrior cutting things into peaces despite being for all ages. It made plenty of hidden adult jokes and drew from mythology and actual fighting styles. Say what you may but this was an excellent show.

Agreed, I think nickelodean (bad spelling its 2am) did a good job w/ Avatar TLA, they based it off of real fighting styles as well, it wasn't as violent as Sam. Jack I guess, but there was still fighting and had a good story/plot that I can enjoy today as an 18 year old as much as I dd when I was younger.

TL;DR- basically you're right about the risk
#94 to #12 - Rascal (02/21/2013) [-]
I dunno, shows these days can seem to get by with a lot more... like that scene from star wars the clone wars where the guy gets stabbed through the chest....

or that scene from young justice where aqualad stabbed someone... blood and all

what about the homicide/suicide from legend of korra?

you'd be surprised at how tame most older shows were, often having flashes right as characters were being punched, or trying to stray from too much violence
#101 to #94 - asasqw (02/21/2013) [-]
True but on one of the first episodes Jack fights an army of robots to defend a village. Since it was still a kids show they needed to use oil rather than blood but Jack was drenched in oil. Imagine looking down at one man with every inch of his body covered in the blood of your friends....serious **** for a kid to be thinking about.

I remember the first time I saw Samurai Jack. I was not really going to watch it originally because the commercials at the time made it look like this big corporate thing that was going to sell toys or some **** . But it was on, and nothing else was at the time. So I sat and watched, and it dawned on me the amazing thing that was unfurling before my eyes. Never before had I seen a cartoon with such beautiful backgrounds and detail given to secondary or tertiary characters. Never before had I watched a cartoon that was story driven but not verbally driven. It was great, it was almost like watching Looney Tunes for the first time.

I was very said earlier this year to find out that the voice actor for Aku had passed 6 years prior.

I'm not foolish enough to think that everything from my childhood should be cherished and everything else sucks, I just hope that kids after me are lucky enough to have creators who love their work as much as some of the shows I was able to watch growing up.

Samurai Jack was ******* incredible. Animation wise, action wise, Storywise. it was ******* faultless. I still watch it, it's on at 10 O Clock everynight here. Every cartoon back then was exceptionaly good at what it did. I can't think of a bad cartoon from back then, they've let it slide but Adventure time and Regular show have brought it back up. Gumball isn't that bad either.

Shows like Ren and Stimpy were made mostly for ***** and giggles just to see what the producers could get past the censors.

I was born in 1990, and posts like this are so ******* stupid.

90's kids are the world's youngest oldfags.
User avatar #191 to #76 - rieskimo (02/21/2013) [-]
Born in 87, I have to remind myself every ******* day that I'm only in my twenties. I think the issue is that with the accelerated rate of growth and developement in technology as a 90's kid you see things go obsolete a lot quicker than your predecessors had to deal with(My mom for example used vinyl most of her life and then had to switch to cassettes and again quickly to CD and now they all suck). Also it's really easy to wax nostalgic about things because everything is at your fingertips with the internet. Kids who were born during the 90's had all this stuff by the time they were cognizant people, so are used to that one technological way of life. I could honestly go on for longer but I won't. Basically I agree whole-heartedly.

tl;dr ***** crazy with the acceleration in tech and 90's kids are a bunch of wannabe oldfags.
User avatar #93 to #76 - breadbasket (02/21/2013) [-]
I was born in 1994, and I only consider someone a "90's kid" if they were born in 1980-85.

I don't really get the point of bitching about this, I was an early 90s kid and I'm over 20 now, of course I don't watch CN, I'm not the target audience for a kid channel anymore.

If I was a kid nowadays I would probably love these new shows, I have a little brother who does that.

If you think about it, really old cartoons were a lot better than the 90s cartoons too (objectively), Top Cat, The scooby doo show and Fred Flintstone had a lot better quality than shows like "ed, edd and eddy", "cow and chicken" and "I am weasel", but kids in the 70s and 80s didn't have internet to go to when they wanted to complain and whine about new cartoons like we do today.

This is even worse than people who complain about music nowadays, at least the music is somewhat targeted to you and not kids.

On English Television, Toonami and Cartoon Network started out as Seperate networks
User avatar #157 - brenton (02/21/2013) [-]
You guys do realize that's just the way things work? Popularity of different types of television shows fades when a new generation comes around. Those who liked Scooby Doo thought the original Pokemon was idiotic when we thought it was the best thing in the world. Our own tastes rarely change because we associate those television shows with childhood, the best time of our lives in most cases. Just because the new generation is building associations with different television shows, doesn't mean they're wrong for doing so.
