A VALENTINE FROM THE UNIVERSE
Rather than paper and lace, emission nebula I 1805, also known as the
Heart Nebula, is made up ma plasma unionized hydrogen and free
electrons. Looking toward the Cassiopeia constellation, one can find the
Heart Nebula 7, 500 light years away in the Perseus arm of our galaxy.
Near its center, the radiation from an open cluster of stars known as
Melotta 15 causes the vibrant red emission of this cloud of dust and gas.
This nebula spans across 200 , but it is not alone in this
region ofthe sky. Nearby I 1848 is known as the Soul Nebula. Two
minor nebulae, I 1871 and I 1795 (the brightest part inwhich is
known as NGC 896) lie off either side of the major pair.
