Okay I think I figured it out took a wee while and I'm not too sure but I did like a challenge!
I don't think you are supposed to use 100 for every number, I think it is that the nearest ten above or equal to the number (eg. 81-90 is 90, 71-80 is 80). Then the number made by subtracting the sum of the two products is times by the number in the ten times table. Then the number made by multiplying the same products is added on.
Example:
19x14 so I use 20
PRODUCTS: 20-19 = 1 , 20-14=6
Addition of 1+6 = 7, so 20-7 =13
This number is multiplied by whatever number you start with. 13x20=260
Then you do the multiplication of the products 1x6=6
Then these are added to make 266. which is indeed what 19x14 equals.
In the case of zero it's basically the same as above but you use 0 instead of 20 as that's the nearest ten above or equal to.
So 0x0
0-0=0 0-0=0
0+0=0
0x0=0
so 0x0=0, but this is a complete waste of time for that as the answer needs to be found within the method anyway.
it might have been an elevator in a High tourist traffic area of japan (they do use some english in those areas). They don't use the number 4 as one of the words used for it means "death"
this picture might have been taken in china. their word for 4 is very similar to the word for death and as such many buildings skip that number door or floor altogether. kind of like how we do with the number 13 in many of our buildings
Im trying to figure out exactly how this method works, it seems like its just Multiplying 100 x 100 and then subtracting from it the difference between the numbers you are multiplying
Look at comment #58 it's a reply to #8. I think I have an idea of how it works. Something like you split the numbers so that they can be multiplied by a multiple of ten and add on tp a multiple of single digit numbers, so there is less thinking involved.
