Assuming that he means America in comparison to the world average IQ then yeah, the US' average is 98. I was thinking at first that he meant the US as a standalone number, in which case the average would always be set at 100.

It was never in the 50s or 60s. With at least 100 million people in America since the standardization of the IQ test, and an incredibly diverse population, there is simply no way that the average could diverge from the international average that far.

Extremely stupid joke. The IQ test controls for cultural differences, so American will have its own set of questions it uses for IQ tests. The IQ tests are developed so that the average person (so on the American test, the average American) will score around 100. So the score of 100 never really gets past a certain point before they revamp the test and adjust the average score back to 100.

tl;dr According to this joke, the average age of an American is rising past 100 years.
User avatar #95 to #93 - umaya (02/09/2013) [-]
not unless you use a global average, then look at each countries average in comparison to that. But you are right, it will still be around 95 which means they are getting dumber and living longer, so not really a joke, more of a fact.

User avatar #57 to #36 - daentraya (02/09/2013) [-]
The man who made the IQ thing also stated that it shouldnt be used to indicate intelligence alone. There are several ways of being intelligent. Mine is completely average, and i still have no clue as to what the hell i was doing when i answered the questions
User avatar #37 to #36 - sockprague (02/09/2013) [-]
Above a hundred it doesn't really matter. Below 75 I think it does matter. For community service I worked with mentally handicapped children and their IQ was around that.
User avatar #39 to #37 - buttgauges (02/09/2013) [-]
Even those who are below 75 still aren't complete idiots. What about the rain man? Do you think he's a genius or just retarded?
User avatar #40 to #39 - sockprague (02/09/2013) [-]
Well he was a fictional character with a rare disorder. People below 75 certainly still have worth while points of view, sometimes beautiful, poignant and even profound. But, they aren't intelligent. Not being intelligent is not an insult. Intelligent is an adjective. It describes something, it doesn't become it.
User avatar #41 to #40 - buttgauges (02/09/2013) [-]
You do realize that Kim Peek is the real rain man right?

And the ideas of intelligence is constructed by society. People think that Albert Einstein "genius" is the only genius and I disagree.
#88 to #41 - pariahlol (02/09/2013) [-]
If we use the word genius to describe people closer to average, then the word loses it's worth. It already has to some degree, but if you degrade it to the level of smart, then we lose ways to describe what is truly "genius". That's why Einstein level genius is what is considered genius
User avatar #139 to #88 - buttgauges (02/09/2013) [-]
You're assuming that I'm thinking of labeling everyone a genius because they have some small talent. You said yourself that savant syndrome is a rare disorder, which it is.
I'm saying that there are other types of geniuses and it's not necessarily a common thing.
What about Mozart? I think he was a genius but others would disagree because he didn't think "logistically" like Einstein did.
#144 to #139 - pariahlol (02/09/2013) [-]
Most people agree that Mozart is a genius. The only people who would disagree is the idiots who think genius is logical. Genius is not restricted to logic. As for your discussion about the rain man. His mental illness was a mental illness, but that doesn't mean it diminished his intelligence. The person you were arguing with before (i'm not him) was saying that mental retardation that is coupled with low IQ's (as a result) doesn't create intelligence. There is such a thing as mental retardation that doesn't have as profound an effect on one's IQ, such as is the case with rain man.
User avatar #146 to #144 - buttgauges (02/10/2013) [-]
Oh my mistake, I thought you were him :) And those "idiots" are the majority of the population, that's my point. When most people think of the smartest man to have ever lived, people don't think of Mozart or even Da Vinci, most minds shoot straight to Einstein.

But actually, if the rain man took an IQ test his results would definitely be very low. He can remember insane amounts of data, but cannot apply what he knows. He can answer the what or the where, but not the why or the how which would not place him very high if he took the test.
#147 to #146 - pariahlol (02/10/2013) [-]
Well, in that case, (i've never seen the rain man movie) I would say that he has Knowledge, but not Genius. The difference is whether somebody can recall info and calculate, or whether somebody can creatively think things up, and stuff like that. Just my opinion though. And I have to say, in my opinion most people don't just limit Genius to Einstein-types, he's just the first person people think of when talking about genius.
User avatar #148 to #147 - buttgauges (02/10/2013) [-]
I dunno, if a guy can count cards in a 6-decker game of black jack (there's a name for it, but I can't remember it), I would consider him a genius. He can memorize phone books! I don't think it's necessarily knowledge, in my own opinion I think that's genius.

But I took a psych course a few years back and as a test the professor had everyone write on a piece of paper who they thought was the most intelligent person to have ever lived. Pretty much everyone except for a select few put down Einstein andnd we had 10 minutes to think about it.
#151 to #148 - pariahlol (02/10/2013) [-]
That's mostly because when people think Genius, the first thing they think of is intelligence, and then scientist. This leads to Einstein, also with the fact that Einstein is used in every day language as a word synonymous with Genius, it's the first thought to many people. Just because he's thought of first, doesn't mean people don't discredit Mozart. If you ask somebody whether or not Mozart was a genius, almost everybody will say yes, he's just not the first genius people think of.

But it goes around both ways. The arguments fully revolve on fat Americans and the big ass debt. Back then being fat was attractive because it meant you were rich. It sorta is like that right now, except the attractive part. I love how industrialized America is almost to the point how fat America is. But one thing is that America is not stupid, our literacy rate is 99%. The other 1% is mostly older people who came here without the good opportunities. If my parents never came here I would not have that much potential. I just love this country, though it does have flaws.
