The things that bother me though is rapists, and immigrants.
Immigrants (often eastern-europe people) who go on stealing-sprees. They don't care if they're caught, because the nice prisons.
And rapists. Rapists get 2-5 years here in Norway, I think thats way to little

People from eastern-europe often just get deported and handed to their country's legal system, but they don't care because It's better to steal than to go back home.

#625 to #24 - anon (02/06/2013) [-]
Not all prisons look like that in Norway, and not everyone is treated that way.
For example Breivik who killed lots of youths in Norway. He will spend the rest of his life in isolation, because he says he'll do the same thing again if he ever gets out of prison.
He will be kept there for the rest of his life because he's a danger to the society, atleast that's what I think will happen.

well, in a sense i agree with you, but since our system works the way it does Norway has one of the lowest crimerates in the world. those who enter prison in Norway are less lightly to enter again after getting out. you can say whatever you want and claim it's retarded for letting people you think should be killed for what they've done, but the truth is that it simply works!

The worse punishment you can give a man is to take away his freedom. Norway still does this. They don't play around all day, either.

It's important to understand that most individuals are not at complete fault for their actions.

Fact of the matter is that our correctional system is not effective. It is actually in crisis. It should be about rehabilitation and making sure the prisoner can give back to society and more importantly, that they do not commit more crimes. Keeping a felon in prison costs over $30,000 a year - more than twice what we spend on education, for a lot of states.

Our correctional system also doesn't really do anything that it sets out to do. You'd think that it would set an example or instill fear into the mind of other citizens - yet crime rates only increase. You'd think it would serve as retribution for the people affected by the crime - yet no one really feels better about it.

We take a person that probably did not have a good home, good parents to teach them good values, and a good education, and who are then, in fact, not at complete fault for their actions because coincidence and society itself conditioned them to be the way they are and we make them live in INHUMAN conditions, with prisoners that just set further bad examples, no therapy, and we expect them to come out of there in 20 years a new man.
#402 to #58 - anon (02/06/2013) [-]

I think people coming out of thins kind of prison will be a lot better suited for society than ones coming out of the concrete hell holes we have in America.

Maybe the positive atmosphere in these prisons can rub off on the convicts(at least the ones not mentally disturbed), making them want to have a functioning life instead of leaving prison worse than when they arrived.

User avatar #106 to #55 - pokemonstheshiz ONLINE (02/06/2013) [-]
one of the reason America's prison system is so bad is because they want more people in them, so they end up jam packing all the cells to save costs. The reason for this is because a lot of prisons are privately owned, but are given government grants per inmate, so the more that are locked up the more money they make. Prison owners were some of the main lobbyists for passing that law in Arizona that let people be asked for proof of citizenship at anytime. They made nearly 500 million from it since then.
I totally agree with you, I'm just explaining a large part of why we don't do that in America

#133 to #62 - grahamernazi (02/06/2013) [-]
You always have to consider how long the entire country has been a certain way. If you were just change the prisons in America to be the same as the ones in Norway, it might not go as planned. Idk how Norwegians think, but if all I got was 20 years in a room like that for killing someone, I might just do it. You get that nice room, which is better than some apartments I have seen, you can study til your heart's content, get a free gym membership, at least 3 nice, freshly cooked meals for...nothing. Doesn't sound that bad. There are tons of people that are starving, because they can't find jobs (or pure laziness) and would, sadly enough, commit a crime over and over JUST to live there.

It's America and how things are. We will have to have another World War and find a president that will completely turn around our lifestyle for us to actually better our society.

Although, if THAT prison is just for petty crimes, then yes, we do need those. All the ones we have go to rich habitual ******** .

User avatar #767 to #133 - MandiMarie (02/06/2013) [-]
I agree. It would definitely be difficult to suddenly change from what we have now to what they have. I think these prisons are for people that commit less serious crimes and have hope for rehabilitation. I mean, maybe we should keep our prisons like they are for people who commit murder and rape and torture, and have ones like these for people who commit crimes like unarmed robbery or assault. I do agree with you, though, it would be nearly impossible if not completely impossible to change the mentality of our entire nation. But I wish we could to it lol
User avatar #67 to #55 - frienderman (02/06/2013) [-]
Because unlike the American system this is a correctional prison, not a punitive prison. American prisons are there to deter people from committing crimes, Norway's prisons are to fix people who commit crimes.

All prisons are supposed to deter people from committing crimes but the way the American prison system is its more profitable to have more people in prison because of the amount of basically slave labor you get from the prisoners so in American prisons if people were rehabilitated that would hurt profit so unfortunately in the American prison systems money comes before everything else.
