Being desensitized is pretty common nowadays. Most men don't cry unless something traumatic happens (i.e. relative or someone close dying, for example).

I know how you feel man, before I watch Clannad I hadn't cried in roughly 7 years. However, I got really into the storyline, and on one of the last episodes of the second season I shed two tears. It was pretty nice.

No dude, it doesn't work like that. You need to know the characters. You need to play from the very start.

if you're a nostalgiafag like me, do one of the following:
-look for a song from the soundtrack of a game you loved playing when you were younger
-look for the intro (or any song that gets played more often during the series) of an old anime/cartoon you loved watching as a kid (if you aren't a native english speaker, make sure it's in your native language)

You are now thinking about that toy you don't play with any more.
What was it's name again? Oh yeah, "-----".
That's right you just remembered "-----". Continue to think about your lost childhood and how you'll never see it again.
Oh and that girl. You know THAT girl. She hates you. Never wants to see you again.
In fact it's not only THAT girl, but EVERY girl.

These are just some of the standard ones. If you want some describing the uselessness of existence, just ask

Have ... Fun?

read some manga or anime with some sad death or something of a character in it. That stuff seriously makes me tear up. Movies and shows work too. Just anime and manga do it more frequently.

Try reading Samurai Deeper Kyo. Badass story, little perverted at times, get connected to characters, sad backstories.
