I'm not trying to get in an argument here, but this does actually make perfect sense. I'm not religious so that's not why I say that. In this comic God is real and had the ability to do anything he wants. That includes making it impossible for them to grow anything. So from their point of view it's not him making things difficult for them, it's him being merciful and letting them eat.

I agree with you, I think of the bible or any other religious text as more of a set of lessons or guidelines that one can use to live your own life, this one being that you should be happy that you have the opportunity to obtain food or even that one should have to work to earn their keep. It's people that either take passages too literally or even using it as an excuse to justify their own means that really give religion a bad name. I have plenty of friends who are religious and they are all really kind people who don't act that way because they are "god-fearing" but because they enjoy being good natured. I eventually would like to read the Torah, Bible, and the Qur'an to gain a better understanding of each.
