Each main character represents a deadly sin and the entire scenario falls back to greek mythology. Willy Wonka is Hades, the boat ride is like the crossing of the river of souls, and he is looking for the one pure person to replace him.

Also, the Wonkavator could represent the ascension into heaven.

Augustus Gloop is Gluttony (always eating or thinking of eating)
Veruca Salt is Greed (Spoiled brat who always wants more)
Violet Beauregarde is pride (always boasting)
Mike Teavee is sloth (always watching TV)
Grandpa is Envy (Wants what Willy has and what Charlie has (the ticket))
Charlie is lust (not sexual but the intense desire)
and Wonka is Wrath (punishes everyone for there flaws)

So Charlie wasn't pure, he was lust. Then why was he rewarded if he were another of the deadly sins?
#59 to #39 - anon (01/26/2013) [-]
Because he was willing to overcome his lust in the end. He gave up the Gobstopper.

i would have thought that Mike was wrath because he always watched violent tv shows, and mentioned wanting a gun. Grampa Joe could represent sloth because he was "bed ridden" until charlie found the ticket. Charlie is envious of all the kids, and the world is full of lust for the tickets. That's just my view.

Your information on this movie gave me a newfound appreciation for the story. I use to think it was just 'okay' and a little too old for my taste, but now that makes a lot of sense and I am impressed with the writing. Thanks for that.
#63 to #6 - killerrook ONLINE (01/26/2013) [-]
That's the tricky thing, lust could have been Charlie because he wanted the ticket, or he could have been envy because the other children had one and he didn't. I see it as the world is full of lust for the tickets, in a non sexual way of course.

Also, when everyone is led to the new televison candy room, they are given glasses and jackets. You'll notice, once again, that there are just enough for everyone. He knew there would only be 2 kids left.

they didn't die though. Both in the book and in the remake we see them walking out of the factory at the end

Oh wow, wrong in the first six words. He knew they could succumb to greed but not die hence them all living due to special treatments for whatever befell them.

would make sense why he was so angry when charlie survived in the end.

i guess.
User avatar #23 to #7 - myrtille ONLINE (01/25/2013) [-]
He got angry because Charlie said he wouldn't move into the factory without his family.
User avatar #51 to #23 - cleverguy (01/26/2013) [-]
thats the new movie. in the old movie, charlie and his grandfather break the rules and he gets yelled at. if i remember right he only wins because he told the truth about that guy who allegedly wanted to steal the everlasting gobstopper recipe but really worked for wonka

When they made this movie, who decided it would be a good idea to change the name? Seriously. Why?
#31 to #19 - anon (01/25/2013) [-]
If you're talking about when they remade it and called it Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, it's because they weren't allowed to remake the movie unless they removed Willy Wonka from the title.
User avatar #40 to #31 - jacencaedus (01/26/2013) [-]
he's talking about why they changed the name from Charlie and the Chocolate factory, to Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory, the movies are based off the book 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' by Roald Dahl
User avatar #42 to #19 - jacencaedus (01/26/2013) [-]
Especially since Willy Wonka is more about Charlie and Charlie is more about Willy Wonka

His factory is closed off to the public for years. Unless he kidnaps children, but then it doesn't make sense to just suddenly have 5 kids come into the factory. They're also shown to be fine later in the book and the movie.

Most likely it was just a stunt to get people to buy more candy.
