The PS3 is 7 years old. And you can still play games with good graphics.

You try to play a modern game on a 7 year old PC you would have to spend 100s of $ just to get the pc good enough to play it

Steam sales dude. They're awesome. Crysis 1 and Crysis warhead were a £5 bundle when I got them and in the winter sales you could get a massive bundle of THQ games with both darksiders games, homefront, metro 2033 and a few other games all for just £20. Although games consoles are initially cheaper, PC is far cheaper in the long run if you buy a lot of games.

That being said, the temptation of cheap steam games can be a real drain on your wallet since you just end up buying everything in sight.

You have to consider the fact that virtually everyone in the US already owns a computer. the cost of upgrading to a gaming computer is not that much (~150-250) which is the same price as a console. So even though ur paying 700+ for your gaming computer u needed a computer anyway so its not that much more. The same way people assume that you already have a tv when you buy a console, no one says, an xbox is 800 because u need the consol and the tv, its assumed you already have it.

And yes u can easily spend 5k on a gaming computer but that is just useless, so dont count that in ur argument.

I'm not saying i need one, i'm just stating that with the cost of parts and depending on whether you're building your own (by god i would hope someone would build their own) it'll run about $700 to get a machine that can run on insane Perhaps other places could be cheaper, but where i'm from there are next to no deals on computer **** , and the prices are only rising due to popularity
#87 to #22 - anon (01/25/2013) [-]
Sucks. In my state(USA), pc components are fairly cheap. Costs about 500 to make a good gaming rig.

For me, it goes like this: PCs have exchangeable parts for upgrades, as a gaming console it's pretty much eternal, and you can get games for 5-20 once their initial price goes down (or pirate). Consoles require complete replacement, have insanely expensive games, and often you're ****** if you break it.

Of course, other places probably vary. (Apparently Netherlands has issues where games are $80... after release)
User avatar #24 to #22 - poetsofthefall (01/25/2013) [-]
Okay, say you buy a brand new 360 for $300 plus tax then you buy 4 new releases that year as well other games, a headset and batteries and other accessories. That's over $700 right there.

Mine cost 350 € and i can play every game i wanted. If i would've bough 410 € one i could play skyrim and all the other fancy games.

Speaking of Skyrim, I can play that on very high settings without any trouble. But New Vegas or Farcry 3 either can't run or has lots of problems respectively.

I have a Lenovo laptop, AMD A6-3420M APU 1.50GHz and 8GB ram. Don't get me wrong, its a fantastic laptop, best I've ever had, but it's not exactly what I'd call cheap. Hell, it was either get this or buy a car, and I felt this would be a better investment.

Agreed sir, but I'm all right with it. I love this laptop and wouldn't trade it for anything. Just a shame some games run awfully on it. Speaking of, you wouldn't have any idea how to fix New Vegas crashing would you? It's when the opening cutscene starts playing, it just shuts down, saying my driver is incompatible or something.

Similar spec desktop has no room in my house for. Hence why I wanted a laptop. It does everything required of it, playing games, interneting, running my minecraft servers, ect. But a desktop, I wouldn't be able to take into the kitchen to watch cartoons while making toast. Gotta spend money to make money champ.
#237 to #231 - cubanpedro (01/25/2013) [-]
You seem to be missing my point, I am merely pointing out that PC gaming can be "cheap" in the realm on consoles. I hardly see you dragging a PS3 or 360 into the kitchen.
#244 to #237 - andimac (01/25/2013) [-]
You seem to be missing my point. Cartoons and toast. But seriously, even a desktop PC would be expensive. PCs are not cheap. You mention that they are easier to upgrade. That upgrading is not free, so it all adds up.

Also, WiiU gamepad works in the kitchen. Mario while cooking. Your move friend.

No, a gaming desktop with better graphics than a console is not expensive.
#260 to #245 - andimac (01/25/2013) [-]
Lets agree to disagree. The point is, nothing in this world is cheap. No matter what you go for, you're looking at a few hundred quid out of your pocket. Then the games themselves are expensive. As for a desktop with better graphics, you can get a cheap enough graphics card to get great graphics on a computer for a little over 300 euros. But for the price you pay for that, AND your computer in the first place, you could get a new Xbox or maybe even a PS3 for less. To get the BEST graphics you can on a PC, you'll be spending thousands. And for what? To absorb yourself in the world of gaming instead of hanging out with friends, playing games with them on a console, maybe even going out with them to have fun.
I'm at college studying games development, in year two. ALL of my friends play games. And sure, we all play PC games a lot, but this is generally because we've not all got the same consoles. I myself have a PS3, others have Xboxs. The most fun thing I've done with one friend is staying up all night playing Resident Evil 5 ( **** game, Alcohol helped) something we wouldn't have been able to do on PC. That would have required we both have a decent PC and a copy of the game each.
My point? Well, I'm not sure I have a point (insert penis joke here) but I still stand by what I said. PCs are expensive. So are consoles. PCs can be upgraded. Consoles can't.

Now, toast... And cartoons!

even though you can get a pc with superior hardware for about $500-$600, to actually get anything for everyday gaming would be much more expensive. I have $1300 in my build right now, and thats not including the mechanical keyboard (approx $100), gaming mouse (approx $60), graphics card (approx $500), and the monitor (approx $350). can't forget that 5.1 or 7.1 suroound sound setup, either! (approx. $350) you have to hear where those bullets are coming from.
all approx. values are things I do not own yet.

you see, when you use a regular keyboard, its probably a rubber dome keyboard. rubber dome meaning under every key, there is a rubber dome acting like a spring to deactivate the switch every time you press it. Mechanical keyboards have real springs, and so have a uniform activation pressure throughout the board. they are also much more enjoyable to type on once you get used to it. you can get keyboards that have a variety of properties like differing actuation force, tactile feedback, and volume (mech. boards are loud).

when it comes to mice, if you are gaming, you want your pointer and/or character to reflect the way you move your mouse, correct? when you turn the sensitivity up in a pc game, your movements become less accurate, as it induces angle snapping (not making a smooth transition from point to point, but rather jumping from point to point). this makes it very hard for snipers on the pc. getting a better mouse with a higher DPI than standard (standard = approx 800 DPI and a good gaming mouse = approx 6000 DPI) allows you to move at that increased sensitivity speed, but without the inaccurate angle snapping. with better ones, you can also step down the DPI while in game, with a press of a button, to allow for finer movements.

a keyboard can affect gameplay a lot, depending on what type of game your playing. when playing MMO's there are extra keys that you can set macros to. this allows a whole set of instructions to be condensed onto one single key press, sometimes allowing for semi-autonomous gameplay. think WoW or League of Legends.

Yeah, but consider this: consoles are only good for about 3 things (gaming, watching movies, and internet), and they aren't even very good at the third thing. Whereas with a decent PC, you can do hundreds of things. Not to mention, when your PC becomes obsolete or breaks, you can just upgrade it, while with a console, you have to buy a whole new unit.
User avatar #278 to #268 - mcatheistnuggets (01/25/2013) [-]
I'm saying that for solely buying something for gaming, it isn't cheap, most people already have a computer and don't see the need to upgrade, they would just rather spend around $200 and get an Xbox, instead of spending $600 to get both.
User avatar #221 - sylvar (01/25/2013) [-]
PC, master race for the rich.

you can get a cheap PC but it aint gona have good graphics, well they will still be better then ps3 or xbox360 but not good.

I bought a computer for my brother for $300 that can play any game at better than ps3 lvl graphics at 35-60 fps depending on the game. you can always spend a ******* of money on a super computer like mine that can play every game at the highest settings, on full resolution, at 120fps, while recording with fraps, but that is just wasteful. The ps4 and new xbox are not even 1/3 the speed of my computer and they're not even out yet
