3(2x+9y) = 6x+27y = 0
2(3x+5y) = 6x+10y = 34

Equation 2 - Equation 1

-17y = 34

y = -2

Use this value in equation 1:

2x + (9*-2) = 2x - 18 = 0

2x = 18

x = 9

2(9) + 9y = 0
18 + 9y = 0
6 + 3y = 0
3y = -6
y = -2

you forgot to answer for y you silly billy :3

Oh dear God I actually miss these. I might see if I can get a maths paper from when I was 15 and do it for a bit of fun.

guessing and checking works in this case because it is easy the real solutions is:
2x + 9y = 0 => 2x = -9y => x = -(9/2)y => x = -(4.5y)
now sub into other equation:
3(-4.5y) + 5y = 17 => (-13.5)y + 5y = 17 => -8.5y = 17 => y = -(1/2)
now sub y value into original equation:
2x + 9(-0.5) = 0 => 2x - 4.5 = 0 => 2x = 4.5 => x = 2.25
y = -0.5; x = 2.25

Look at the first equation : 2x + 9y = 0.

What is the first numbers you'd think that can cancel each other out to make it a perfect 0?

simple watch this: 2x + 9y = 0
*9 *-2

18 + -18 = 0

Now if you try it on the 3x + 5y = 17 to confirm:

3(9) + 5(-2) = 17
27 - 10 = 17
17 = 17

If the sum of both is equal to 0, you can multiply them by having opposites with one of them being negative.

Except that half of the math textbooks that high schools use are **** . Of course that's assuming they even had enough money to give all the kids their own books in the first place.

Well see, Yahoo answers might not be there to do homework, but it is there for... I don't know... answering questions?

I don't see why people need to be a dick about it.

ummm y = -0.5 and x = 2.25 and any factor of those two. So if it had to be whole numbers just multiply by 4. (y = -2; x = 9)
