It doesn't say they are recognized as a hate group by everything. Just some groups, plenty of people and groups already considered them a hate group.

I'm fairly sure that the text underneath is the author of the petition supporting his argument. meaning that the southern poverty law center already recognized them as a hate group. this petition is to get them nationally recognized as a hate group. i dont think the magical fairy princessistration has responded to it yet.

It's a small victory but a victory none the less. This is only the beginning of the movement.

Like the first time you fight Alduin at the throat of the world. Even though he isn't killed, you defeated him in battle and showed him that his evil will not be tolerated.

A battle won is another step closer to the war being over, friend.

you realize that you're supporting the unconstitutional silencing of a group of individuals, it seems as though everyone forgets the basic rights of a human being if they're insulting others.

Except that protesting at others funerals, I would argue, violates the right of a peaceful funeral.

so you violate constitutional rights to protect the "right" to not be bothered in a public place?
#246 to #215 - tacblack (01/20/2013) [-]
Implying you can't put limitations on constitutional rights. They have the right to protest just not to violate someone's privacy/peace of mind. It's a form of harassment. You're not violating their right, you're just limiting it.

I'm confused as to what the **** you're talking about.

all this content is saying is that some people think the WBC is mean. that's not new.

No. This states that organisations much bigger than just your local rec center and soccer team are LEGALY filing them as a hate group. Which means more powers will be lobbied against them, and strip them of their rights as a church. That way, they can no longer dodge paying taxes, gain free city services, and will have to pay for their crimes, instead of claiming them a religious act.

This is much bigger than "a bunch of mean people". These are people who make money by being monsters, and take advantage of american rights to do so by lying about what they are.

These organisations are big enough to pursue and file damning lawsuits against Westboro and arrest them, reverse the pain they have put on the tax payers, and finally get some justice on the people they keep hurting.

yeah, and this has been going on for a long ******* time. nothing has come of it so far. what's your point?
#36 to #35 - cometfire (01/19/2013) [-]
Yes. but only by small and scattered groups. This is the first multi-billion dollar organisation lobby that has a LOT of power and sway with the american government, and the white house. This is the first time the actual government heads are being pulled into this.

I'm trying to explain it simply as possible. This isn't just one small grouping of people. This is thousands who have filed and agreed to set their minds to taking them down all at once. This has not happened before.

this specific petition isn't new. it's been going since last year, and is past the due date for it. so far, nothing has come from it. no response, nothing.

why are you celebrating? this isn't new, and nothing has happened.
User avatar #69 to #39 - cometfire (01/19/2013) [-]
it is not passed due. If you read it, it is stating it was accepted on time, you ******* moron
#103 to #69 - anon (01/19/2013) [-]
you underlined the fact that people find the WBC mean, and added a reaction saying that was a victory.

also, feel free to block me and call me a moron. you're clearly much more intelligent and mature than I first believed.

Lol right after the underlined text it says it's only recognized by certain organizations. Is fj to lazy to read the rest of the sentence or something?

The petition will go to be reviewed by congress since it has over 25,000 signitures.... and since it has 325,000 I think they'll take this pretty seriously.
User avatar #87 to #16 - Ruspanic ONLINE (01/19/2013) [-]
It's not reviewed by Congress, it's reviewed by the Obama admi nistration. Reaching the threshold number of signatures only makes someone from the executive branch (most likely, a spokesperson) to post a response. There's no guarantee of action, and in this case probably nothing will happen.
#7 - anon (01/19/2013) [-]
Wait, wait, wait... Should we be cheering just yet? Isn't this just the petition, and not a legal result?
#42 to #7 - anon (01/19/2013) [-]
Yeah this just means the white house has to give an official response. The response could still be no.

I don't think OP understands. This is a petition to the US federal government to recognize it as a hate group. It hasn't gotten a response. Westboro is not kill. OP you fail. 2/10

But when you see how many signatues are needed. Zero. The petition is accepted then, is it not?

Dear diary,

Today, FJ didn't read more than half a sentence.
#93 - Ruspanic ONLINE (01/19/2013) [-]
Okay, first of all the petition only requires a response by someone from the Obama adm inistration, not actual legislation or executive action. In all likelihood nothing will really happen, except some Obama spokesperson writing something about the First Amendment.

Secondly the government has no business designating any group as a "hate group" unless they're violent or intentionally incite violence against others. It should not engage in content discrimination, even if the content is hateful or offensive. The WBC are assholes, but what they do is well within their rights to free speech and free assembly.
People need to learn that the government has a limited purpose. It is not a panacea to solve all their problems, or a parent who will take care of them and punish bullies and restrict freedoms "for their own good", or a weapon to be used against people they dislike.
#129 to #93 - txikaze (01/19/2013) [-]
The Civil Rights Act of 1968 enacted 18 U.S.C. § 245(b)(2), which permits federal prosecution of anyone who "willingly injures, intimidates or interferes with another person, or attempts to do so, by force because of the other person's race, color, religion or national origin"

Yeah, they are doing something illegal.

User avatar #131 to #129 - Ruspanic ONLINE (01/19/2013) [-]
But they're not doing any of those things.
They've been sued many times and it has even gone to the Supreme Court. What they do is legal, and they're very careful to make sure it's legal.
#210 to #129 - anon (01/20/2013) [-]
"by force" I've yet to see them physically do anything to anybody.
#97 to #93 - mrmamric (01/19/2013) [-]
I agree. Even though I may not like the Westborow Church it's doing exactly what they did to Martin Luther King Jr..
