America vs. Russia. "Entire economies in middle ages depended on how much old ladies can carry on their backs." Terry Prattchet.. Fake. The rock is supposed to be lifting her.

The woman is using her whole body. The soldiers are using only their arms. I'm guessing the woman only held it up to poise for a picture. The guys on the left have to hold it for a couple hours, all the while they're running from place to place. Think about running 10 miles. Pretty bad, right? Now think about running 10 miles while you're carrying a ******* 600 pound log above your head. You're not allowed to let it rest on your head.

I'm not even sure the picture on the right is real, anyways. On a different time this was posted someone said it was from a Russian comedy movie. I can't be sure though.

They're also relying on arm strength only. She's carrying it by supporting it directly above her center of mass, which is a much easier method as it uses the stronger muscles of the legs and torso rather than the weaker muscles of the arms and shoulders.

Life in the East has always been tougher, so the people are tougher. Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia of course - we all have been through communism and, despite all the wrong that it has done to societies (damage we might never fully recover from), it has done some good to people's physical condition and what we consider toughness.

I mean, to graduate from Russian middle school, one must pull himself up 12 times. Is it common in the West? I don't think so. Modern word neglected strength as a form of beauty. In exchange, we got genderless hipsters, bulked-up bodybuilders, who forgot how to move their own bodies, and a small group of professional sportsmen and women, who (if they reflect sometimes on it) weep about the others.

Ancient Greek, who build the basics of European culture admired physical ability on par with knowledge and wisdom. The name Plato means "broad shouldered" and the great philosopher himself was a wrestler (I don't know if pankrationist is a word).
Why did we abandoned our bodies for extremes, whatever happened to the Golden Middle?

TL;DR modern world pussificates people

But in reality eastern Europe Has some of the highest rates of alcoholism and a culture of steroids surrounding powerlifting an weightlifting.
User avatar #197 to #155 - beerterror (01/18/2013) [-]
Yes, alcohol is a part of everyday life and it's sad. And about steroids... You know, when your ambitions best you, you start cheating - but these are that extremes that I was talking about. The rivalry has sense only on the same level, when you try to beat not you opponent really, but your own limitations.
User avatar #201 to #197 - lazypaul (01/19/2013) [-]
But you make it sound like eastern Europe is some magical, toughened, cultured place because communism turned it into a ********* . And that the west is a land of hipsters and bodybuilders with no culture or 'toughness'. The west is just as vein as the east, the average easterner is no stronger or tougher than their western counterpart and bodybuilders still know how to move and many are also athletes.
#164 to #90 - sebaman (01/18/2013) [-]
At this point physical strength is indeed something that is being neglected, but for a good reason. We don't need it anymore. We have machines to do the heavy lifting so why would we bother. Yes of course we are all pussies, but we like to focus on intelligence rather than strength and this tends do actually help us. We remember plato not because of his wrestling, but because of his philosophy.
User avatar #196 to #164 - beerterror (01/18/2013) [-]
Tell me more about focusing on intelligence... What did we do with all the knowledge? Most of people thinks that if they got a little of physics they know how universe works. Others think that evolution is a proof that Divine doesn't exist. Most of the greatest invention in the history of information is used for jerking off and for cats. Someone said "the sum of intelligence is a constant, only the people keep multiplying."

I don't negate your point, on the contrary - I totally agree that we don't need much physical strength because of the automata that we created to serve our needs. And it's good and natural. But it's like with science - the true science serves only the purpose of knowledge, there is no other point possible, it would therefore ceased to be science. Everything derived from it is optional. The same is with strong and able physique - it's its own purpose and goal. Of course that's only my point of view, I'd be more than happy for a longer discussion :)
#199 to #196 - sebaman (01/18/2013) [-]
I understand your views towards science and except them, however i would like to point out that our only good reason for knowledge is to use it for a purpose. Yes we like to know things, but if it does not propel humanity forward it would be rather useless. As a species we need to do everything possible to survive and being in excellent shape does not do the trick as well anymore. We have entered an age, where our only hope is to develop and learn. We are not going to solve our most pressing problems with bodybuilding. We need to study, we need to learn. I'd rather have our newest generation in school than at the gym because they are our only change of solving problems like global warming and our lack of energy.
User avatar #200 to #199 - beerterror (01/18/2013) [-]
Yes, yes of course. But do you see that intelligence is becoming as elite as, well, good shape? Those bits of physics, chemistry and biology that we see here and there on the Internet hardly can mean that everybody starts to be educated and so on. From what I know, this generation of school children is one of the worst to date. Let the scientists do their work. Let the sportsmen amaze us. But I'm talking only about common people - let us develop ourselves wholly, body and mind together. And well, many signs point to somehow sinister thing - we could solve the problem of energy already, but it's not profitable enough for some people. This all Thorium thing that was here some time ago, the electricity, the stupid decisions planned to be made after the Fukushima tragedy... Who knows, maybe it's the morals that should be developed as well as technology/

Its because everyone likes to rip on america and see the reactions they get.
#45 to #42 - angelusprimus (01/18/2013) [-]
That's because people GET the reactions.
You make fun of England you get "Ha, ha, bloody right, old chap!"
You make fun of Canada you get "Ha, ha, I'm sorry if I'm laughing too loud."
You make fun of Germans you get... ok Germans just go "Zat is nicht funny!" but they don't get offended.
But if you make fun of America, boy do jimmies get rustled.
That's why Americans get so much poked, because reactions are precious.
User avatar #63 to #45 - elitejerkz (01/18/2013) [-]

User avatar #46 to #45 - reaperriley ONLINE (01/18/2013) [-]
Its the prideful thing about the american culture. Me, personally, I give my friends reacts when they tease me or something to get a good laugh but its always in good fun. But people do get their jimmies rustles because in a way they believe they are superior to everyone else. (this is coming from an american.) But even when they believe that they are "superior" much the same way a professional athelete thinks they are superior to amatures, most still recongnize basic human qualities. But yeah, people love rustleing america's jimmies.

Since apparently 1 person doesn't believe me.
Back during WW2 or some **** they only smoked cigars, Americans saw that the germans or russians or something were using newspaper when they ran out of cigar papers. When the soldiers returned home they were doing the same and some dude invented a paper that wouldn't be as toxic when using it.
