unobtainium may be the lamest name for any fictional extra terresttrial metal ever.
User avatar #147 to #70 - jouten ONLINE (01/16/2013) [-]
It's usually the raw word for the thing that the people try to get until they come up with a name for it.
In Avatar, they didn't give it another name. So yeah, you're objectively right that it's the laziest name ever, cause it's like calling your character "Hero", your villain "villain", the sidecast "sidecast #1", "sidecast #2", etc

I don't know, in Ratchet and Clank games you hunted for Raritanium.
User avatar #221 to #70 - cubanwhiteman (01/17/2013) [-]
Maybe it's because it's unobtainable?
User avatar #222 to #221 - jinjo (01/17/2013) [-]
I think that's the point :P But still, it's pretty stupid no matter how you rationalize it :P
User avatar #223 to #222 - cubanwhiteman (01/17/2013) [-]
How about they name it Irrationalisationium?

Maybe it's biologically immortal, like lobsters. They've got stuff which "replenishes" their DNA or something. They won't die until they're eaten, cruhed, or whatever it is.

Immortal means that it can't die. It's really that simple.
User avatar #82 to #49 - coolcalx (01/16/2013) [-]
immortal in a biological sense just means it can't die from old age.

there are several species of animals that are immortal, but they can still die from disease or trauma
User avatar #217 to #26 - ffx (01/16/2013) [-]
It depends on which sense you are referring to. In general terms, immortal means never dying, as in it can never die from anything thrown at it. But in biological terms it merely means that time itself won't be the cause of it's eventual death, there has to be outside factors like disease or trauma to kill it.

*over 5000 years. it's like how a square is a rectangle but a rectangle can't be a square. immortal is over 5000 years, but 5000 years is not immortal.

but what do i know, this iscoming from the same guy who changed Trixx cereal into puffs.
#199 to #193 - anon (01/16/2013) [-]
Since when did it become impossible for a rectangle to be a square??
User avatar #208 to #199 - commanderbunbun ONLINE (01/16/2013) [-]
a square needs 4 equals sides. a rectangle just needs 2 pairs of 2 equal sides.

Read it carefully next time. He showed a picture of one that has lived for 5000 years, but later on he mentioned that those trees are immortal.

Read what guitarguise just said, or, go look up the definition of immortal.
User avatar #226 to #219 - Lightclaw (01/17/2013) [-]
Read what ffx said, or, I shall explain it for you.
OP gave an exampl of one tree that has lived for 5k years.
That was an example of one tree.
Now, speaking of the community of that tree type as a whole, OP said they are imortal.
Alright? Alright.
