I'm not sure most people in the ROI would agree that they are part of the British Isles. Just sayin...
User avatar #120 to #114 - mankey (01/14/2013) [-]
the thing is the Republic of Ireland is in the British Isles because it's a geographic title, not political. It's like Switzerland saying they're not part of Europe because they're not in the EU.
User avatar #140 to #19 - dinkcool (01/14/2013) [-]
The small islands are not a part of Great Britan.
User avatar #145 to #140 - mankey (01/14/2013) [-]
Yeah I know, Hebrides, Anglesea, Isle of White and the Channel Islands are part of the UK. But it's a pain in the arse to colour in those individual islands when it's on that scale, plus people might not notice they were coloured in for UK/GB.

You can probably also notice the Isle of Man which isn't part of the UK or GB is coloured in red too because it's linked to Scotland.

Like I said before, I didn't want the pics to become too detailed. Just short and sweet. If you need a more in depth coverage of Britain, The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, The British Isles and Britains Oversea Terretories, then a link has been provided a few times which is very good at explaining it all. www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNu8XDBSn10
#258 to #19 - unijaw (01/15/2013) [-]
Is the Isle of Anglesey technically part of GB? I know politically its welsh
User avatar #260 to #258 - mankey (01/15/2013) [-]
To be totally honest, I'm not sure. I think because it's an island it doesn't count as part of Britain, but the Menai Straight isn't that big

......looking it up on Wikipedia it says "Anglesey is the largest Welsh island, the sixth largest surrounding Great Britain and the largest in the Irish Sea."

So if you go by that saying "surrounding Great Britain" then it's not part of GB......but still Wikipedia is a dubious source at best. :P
User avatar #24 to #19 - thesoxpride (01/14/2013) [-]
Thats still wrong ****** , Great Britain is the island in which most of England, Scotland, and Wales are located in, but it does not include the islands that are part of England, Scotland or Wales. i.e. The Scottish Hebrides or the Island of the Clyde are not part of Great Britain, however your map depicts them as such
User avatar #44 to #24 - mankey (01/14/2013) [-]
Yeah but it would have been a pain in the arse to just cut those off then fill them in for the particular circumstances. It's really to help with the Ireland and Northern Ireland confusion.

I mean the Isle of Man is also on there coloured in, even though it's independent.
#51 to #44 - itsbendingtime (01/14/2013) [-]
Not to mention that the Channel islands are just completely non-existent.

I see your point. The best explanation on all the confusion regarding the British Isles, imo, is done by CGP Grey:

I was going to take ages and make a more detailed version with England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Great Britain, United Kingdom and British Isles maps.....but I didn't want my post to be "Now listen up children, this is a geography lesson."

Tried to make it short and sweet. :P

**** Northern Ireland, but the Orkney and Shetland islands are left out, and they are part of the UK and Great Britain, and there's at least like, three or four sheep in Shetland that will be pissed off about their exclusion.
User avatar #58 to #43 - fosforgasxiii (01/14/2013) [-]
Great Britain is only the big island, so Northern Ireland and the Orkney and Shetland islands aren't part of it.
User avatar #106 to #58 - feistyoneyouare (01/14/2013) [-]
That would be fine if that was the case, but the tea drawing also shows the Scottish Western Isles, which by your description would also fall outside the definition of 'Great Britain'
