#59 to #56 - snowshark (01/11/2013) [-]
Technically the colonials were British too. They were born in America but under a British regime, making them technically British citizens. Meaning that the Brits technically lost to the Brits and the French and it was only after the war was over that they actually became truly what you would consider to be American.

However, even then, that America is long-since dead and the great men who built the country would weep for the state that it is in. It's secular nature is being challenged, a large part of it's population are ************** dunces and even worse, other Americans find sick pleasure in observing these evolutionary rejects. The pioneering democratic system is stale and forces the country to vote most of the time to keep the people they don't like out of the White House rather than to keep the ones they do like in it.

As amazing as America used to be... now it's nothing more than a bloated, patriotic soiling of perhaps one of the greatest countries ever.

I take pride in the fact that humanity was able to create a country like the America of old, but there is almost nothing about the current America that makes me proud and certainly not enough to make me patriotic.

User avatar #119 to #105 - snowshark (01/11/2013) [-]
You are right, of course, that all generalisations are dangerous (including that one) and as life continues to prove, there's exceptions to most rules. I understand that there are a lot of intelligent people in all parts of America and that both the media and the internet community focus solely on the most interesting (and often most stereotypical and misrepresentative) aspects of a culture.

However the point does remain that there are a -lot- (I'll not say majority because I honestly don't know for sure) of very idiotic and downright disgusting human beings in certain cultures in America (WBC is a prime example) that draw the attention away from the decent human beings who deserve it and the fact that there are so many of them is disheartening if nothing else. The country is in a poor state of affairs, though as I am an optimist I feel that it's not beyond repair.

Now ^ THAT! is what America is about. "Is that a cliff?" "Aye!" "You gonna climb it?" "No, I'm going to chisel the faces of my heroes into it!" "Amen to that, brother."

Britain lost to Britain, essentially.
The people who had moved over to colonise America and the Native Americans fought the British. The people of America today, did nothing.

This article is about the sovereign state. For the Island, see Great Britain. For other uses, see United Kingdom (disambiguation).

The United Kingdom of GREAT BRITAIN and Northern Ireland,[nb 5] commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) and Britain, is a sovereign state located off the north-western coast of continental Europe. The country includes the island of Great Britain, the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland, and many smaller islands. Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK that shares a land border with another state—the Republic of Ireland.[nb 6] Apart from this land border, the UK is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean in the west and north, the North Sea in the east, the English Channel in the south and the Irish Sea in the west.

Great Britain isn't a country, it is a collection of countries. England, Wales and Scotland make up Great Britain. The reason for Great comes from the area being called Britannia major ("Greater Britain") by anglo-saxons, to distinguish it from Britannia minor ("Lesser Britain"), an area in France which is now known as Brittany.
User avatar #77 to #58 - thatissogross (01/11/2013) [-]
No, those are "nations" not countries. They are not among the 194 members of the UN. Which means, they are not countries, but municipal divisions within the United Kingdom.

Wiki is hardly a consistent source, if you look at the pages for England, Wales and Scotland they will say:

"Wales is a country that is part of the United Kingdom and the island of Great Britain" (notice country, ******* )
"Scotland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. Occupying the northern third of the island of Great Britain" (oh look, what a surprise)
"England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west" (is it a miracle? no you're just being ******* retarded)

I haven't thumbed down any of your comments. A little hint from me is to check the continuity of your sources before you assume that if wikipedia says something it must be the truth.

Here's part of an excerpt of some of the legal documentation concerning a constituative theory of stateshood: The constitutive theory of statehood defines a state as a person of international law if, and only if, it is recognized as sovereign by other states. This theory of recognition was developed in the 19th century. Under it, a state was sovereign if another sovereign state recognized it as such. Because of this, new states could not immediately become part of the international community or be bound by international law, and recognized nations did not have to respect international law in their dealings with them.[18] In 1815 at the Congress of Vienna the Final Act only recognised 39 sovereign states in the European diplomatic system, and as a result it was firmly established that in future new states would have to be recognized by other states, and that meant in practice recognition by one or more of the great powers.[
User avatar #315 to #306 - thatissogross (01/11/2013) [-]
yeah, I get your point, but those are not sovereign states in international law. The UN only views those "countries" as constituent countries. They are more like the US in that Scotland would be an equivalent to Texas in the US. I know this might be confusing, but trust a guy who studies international law. Legally those "countries" as constituent nations under the sovereign state of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Though you might have some validity to your argument, it's only based in namesake and not in legally binding criteria. The UN is an organ of international law that abides by a constituative doctrine.
User avatar #324 to #315 - tylersaurusrex (01/11/2013) [-]
I think the best way to explain it is (in comparison, not actuality) England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are the equivalent of US states, each has their own counties and to extent their own laws and different ways of doing things but are all part of the same country.

Also, this is kind of related, my friend went over to America and went into a high school for a week. **** the Queen. The monarchy's an outdated and pointless system with no political relevance in this day and age. It just serves as a platform to waste money on keeping a famously inbred bunch of figureheads well fed.

You seem to have this obsession with being part of this ideal Britain that just doesn't ******* exist. If you're so infatuated with this then move to bloody England and leave Ireland to the people who want it. Independence is coming, for Ireland and for Scotland, and there's little people like yourself can do to stop it.
