It's actually a very simple logical leap that nobody notices.
It's not 49+49+1. It's 49+49-1.
#33 to #19 - John Cena (01/11/2013) [-]
Another way you can look at it to get back to 100; he pocketed one dollar and paid them each one dollar. Since he's adding together how much he continues to owe, he needs to also add how much he's already paid them.
User avatar #22 to #19 - gorginhanson (01/10/2013) [-]
right---
he's confusing debt with assets
User avatar #2 - JCP ONLINE (01/10/2013) [-]
Hate to get all srs when the funnier answer is in the post, but-
Instead of talking about a mixture of who they owe and what they have, when you focus on who dealt the money and who finally received it, the answer is obvious.
They took 50 dollars from their mother, and 50 from their father. (50 + 50 = +100$)
They gave the store 97$, gave themself (kept) 1$, gave 1$ to their mother and 1$ to their father. (-97 - 1 - 1 - 1 = -100$)
There, now all of you amateur mathfags can sleep at night.
User avatar #3 to #2 - xdiabolicx (01/10/2013) [-]
well the dude in the response has the right idea as well. the remaining 97 divided by 2 is 48.50 per parent. add a dollar for both parents to get 49.5 per parent. multiply by two again and get 99. the spare dollar is yours. totaling 100.
#9 to #3 - John Cena (01/10/2013) [-]
Actually you don't keep the spare dollar. The thing that is wrong is that you are adding the money that you owe($98) and then add the money that you have ($1) together when like 98+1=99 when you are actually supposed to say -98+1=-97 which is the money that you used on she shirt.
#48 - John Cena (01/11/2013) [-]
You saw a condom that would fit your girlfriend for $1. You didn't have the cast, so you borrowed $50 from your mom and $50 from your dad.

$50 + $50 = $100

You bought the condom, and had $99 change. You gave your dad $49 and your mom $49 and kept the other $1 for yourself. Now you owe your mom $1 and your dad $1,

$1 + $1 = $2 + your $1 = $3.

Where is the missing $97?
#35 - yomyhomez (01/11/2013) [-]
wait....you borrowed 50$
how do you suddenly owe them 49.50 each?
bastard stole the extra dollar
User avatar #39 to #35 - crazyhindu (01/11/2013) [-]
the equation says you keep a dollar for yourself

#42 - anonmynous (01/11/2013) [-]
You will owe each parent $49.

It will cost you $98 to pay them back but since you have an extra dollar, you only end up losing $97, the cost of the tshirt.

My Dad is good friends with the owner of this restaurant we go to on sundays and when I was like 9 the owner told me the same riddle except it involved a hotel and two people who overpaid for their room and a greedy bellhop. trolled the **** outta me for years until I realised he added the bellhop's theft rather than subtracting it. It's been so long I bet if I told him the answer he'd be like "what da fuq you tlaking about?"

>saw a shirt for $97

he hadn't bought it yet so he hadn't accounted for taxes yet which in adding the standard 5% american tax would total it to 101.85$. he was still short $1.85.

the man owes 98 dollars and has one dollar. the poster say that 49+49+1=99 It should, however, say (-49)+(-49)+1= -97.

Why are people thumbing this **** up? What the **** is wrong with buying a 97 dollar shirt? If I work my ass of, to get me that shirt, that looks good and is made from some famous brand, why the **** is that bad? I'm sorry, but this Nerd-community on FJ is starting to piss me of, cheap clothes, 0 interest in fashion and clothing, and here you are. Judging people because of what they wear, should I do the same? "Who the **** buys a 3 dollar shirt?" "Does he want to look like a bag of **** ?"
Seriously, **** you.

User avatar #10 to #7 - mikesch (01/10/2013) [-]
I like wearing good clothes, but I'd never spend around 100 bucks on a shirt. I could get some really nice pants for that or something.

Kinda depends on the situation, like if you have bills to pay but don't have the money, but could afford 100 dollar t-shirt

Lame example, yea, but an example is an example.
