This is actually a very relevant mechanism in Batman comics. The idea is the "Bad Day Mentality" which basically says all it takes is one bad day to make a perfectly sane man into a lunatic. This can also be applied to a long stretch of a crappy life, like in Bane and Scarecrow's cases. In every example the person feels they were treated unfairly, so they react differently to make their world fair. Ra's decides to wipe out the unfair evil from the world through unmerciful force. Scarecrow makes the world fair by equaling his fear and physical weakness with his opponents through the use of fear gas. Two-Face sees the world is unfair and decides randomness (flipping a coin) is the only way to maintain fairness. In the Nolan movies Bane follows Ra's logic, but in the comics he does it just to inflict his pain on the rest of the world that ignores him. The Joker, different from all of the above, embraces chaos and creates fairness by making life miserable for everyone no matter who they are. Joker creates fairness by removing the concept all together.
There is one more prevalent case in the comics of the Bad Day Mentality, and he is Batman. That's right, Batman. Batman, the exact opposite of the Joker, makes life fair for everyone by stopping the pain that touched him from touching anyone else. Bruce Wayne is just as insane as every villain in Arkham, it is just that his insanity has positive ramifications. Everything in the Batman comics revolves around insanity and how human beings react to Bad Days.
(If you really want an excellent example of this, read Batman: The Killing Joke by Allan Moore. It is famously ends with Batman's shadow mingling with the Joker's, showing they share their madness.)

You are amazing. Do you write books or something? A blog maybe?
User avatar #86 to #56 - Cambro (01/06/2013) [-]
Thanks. I'm in school learning to be a short story writer and essayist. I have no blogs because I'm not pompous enough to believe what I say or write should be followed. I have written Batman fanfiction graphic novels in the past, but they have never been posted anywhere and were only distributed among a college peer group as a goof off project.

am i the only one who thinks if joker and bane had somehow managed to work together they'd have been unstoppable?
User avatar #186 to #46 - elcreepo ONLINE (01/07/2013) [-]
Bane, who follows Ra, would see the Joker as an unfair evil who causes a lot of people a lot of pain for little to no reason.

Joker's hard to predict, but I'm guessing he'd find Bane to be too predictable for his tastes.

You know what I've noticed? Nobody panics when things go "according to plan." Even if the plan is horrifying! If, tomorrow, I tell the press that, like, a gang banger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up, nobody panics, because it's all "part of the plan". But when I say that one little old mayor will die, well then everyone loses their minds! -Joker
