Instead of making fun of Americans for no honest reason, how about I tell you used too much softener?

"Softener" in baking, for those who don't know, is anything meant to make your pre-baked dough softer, or to turn it into batter. Things that do this are shortening, sugar, milk, and butter.

Use too much of any of these, and you'll get an overcooked, paper-thin, cookie-like mass like this one.
