Didn't science, you know, make the planes too?

oh look, it's this thread again...

Generalizing any group by its most radical outliers is fundamentally flawed, and only seeks to completely inflame and derail any sort of mature conversation. Of course anyone could argue that their cause is the moderate and rational one if they completely neglect all but the most violent and vehement of their detractors -- does the fact that hitler, mao, and stalin were all secular leaders immediately prove that all athiests are genocidal, sociopathic maniacs? Moreover, does the fact that a certain group of people has a different set of beliefs than you immediately make them below you? Just because one can regurgitate clever quotes doesn't necessarily meant that they are clever. And while I certainly don't support religion, I still find it ironic that the most vocal athiests are the ones who hold the most illogical and incoherent arguments, composed entirely of stale quotes and inflammatory ad hominem attacks. The only effect of these more militant mouthpieces, unfortunately, is that they only serve to color the entirety of athiests as being argumentative douches, much in the way that jihadists besmirch their own cause.

Religion caused two atomic bombs to be dropped on Japan, right?
User avatar #30 to #17 - Mahazama (01/05/2013) [-]
Nope, War did.
User avatar #34 to #30 - teoberry (01/05/2013) [-]
War was the justification, even though it didn't make sense, I'm not here to debate that. Science, which is what Athiests put their 'faith' in (I know you're going to say that you don't 'believe' in science, but you know what I'm trying to say.), caused this tragedy to happen. At least in a religious war, there are two sides willing to fight, with not a lot of civvies killed, unless people get mad with power. Hiroshima and Nagasaki are the dark side of science, the thing that never should have happened (ex. the Inquisition). Science and religion have both ****** up.
User avatar #43 to #34 - YllekNayr ONLINE (01/05/2013) [-]
Japan would never have surrendered otherwise. Every last Japanese civilian in the way of the emperor would have fought if the U.S. had tried to take it by land. And they did offer for Japan to surrender or be destroyed, and Japan said no.
User avatar #66 to #43 - teoberry (01/05/2013) [-]
But there had to have been better targets to nuke. They should've gone for an army camp or even a fleet of destroyers, and then told Japan 'Surrender, or we bomb your cities'. In my eyes, although I've never been in a war, killing civilians should be a last resort, like I said, they should have gone for a base or something.
User avatar #76 to #66 - YllekNayr ONLINE (01/06/2013) [-]
A base would not have killed their resolve to fight. I mean look at Pearl Harbor. It certainly didn't kill ours. And they didn't give us warning before that, either. I'm not the kind to patriotically wave the American flag or any **** like that, but awful stuff happens in war. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices you know will be big to avoid the chance of even worse things happening.
User avatar #77 to #76 - teoberry (01/06/2013) [-]
Who was making the sacrifice though? It wasn't a sacrifice for anyone but the people who dropped them and the scientists who made them, which wouldnt' amount to .001 of America's population. The Japanese made the sacrifice, if it could be called that. My point is however, bad things have come as the result of science.
User avatar #79 to #77 - YllekNayr ONLINE (01/06/2013) [-]
But just like science doesn't sit around building space shuttles, or atomic bombs for that matter, you can't attribute credit to it. Science is our understanding of how the world works. It's what the rules are. Nothing is truly "because" of science, so much as it is because of people who understand it. Just like with 9/11. It's not "because" of religion, so much as it is the people who would try to use it to excuse their heinous actions.
User avatar #78 to #77 - YllekNayr ONLINE (01/06/2013) [-]
I know. I realized that after I wrote it. It's not their sacrifice to make, so that's probably a poor choice of words.
User avatar #39 to #17 - PieceOfMind (01/05/2013) [-]
No one has claimed such a thing.
Also it was politics and war that dropped the bombs.

******** . Religion, including organized religion, does not have negative effects on people, or on scientific progress. (Yes, I'm aware of the dark ages. Something that happened centuries ago, and has no bearing on the issue today.) Being religious doesn't make you a bad person, and it absolutely isn't mutually exclusive with science (I should know, being a Christian who loves science), as long as the person isn't a ******* idiot who doesn't understand that, you know, religion ******* adapts over time (talking to you, creationists). Seriously, you can't take the vocal, retarded minority as representative of religion in general. Does religion cause wars? **** no, all major religions, at least in their modern forms, are against war and violence. Zealots with their in the sand/up their asses cause wars when they try to use religion as an excuse to kill people. It's true that plenty of scientists are atheist, and that plenty are religious. WHO GIVES A **** . The atheist community (or at least their vocal minority, heh) on this site tends to bitch about getting religion shoved down their throats, but then posts this kind of **** . I have no problem at all with jokes about religion, they're often pretty funny. But these kind of posts-- the "oh, you believe in god, **** you you are retarded and/or the source of all the world's problems"-- piss me the hell off.

Laying it out there for all the dumbasses to see.

Jesus Christ is real. His powers may not be, but he was a living human being who was crucified and martyred.

God's existence is questionable. I believe he exists. You do or don't.

You really need to do research before you claim facts.
There may or may not have been a man who was similar to how Jesus is described, but his name was most definitely not Jesus Christ.

Everyone is stupid. 9/11 and all other terrorist acts that are associated with Islam a re simply byproducts of religious extremism. Religious extremism is completely based upon personal or group interpretations of the religion or aspects of the religion. For example, a prevailing idea in Islam is jihad, or the struggle. Terrorist organizations that cite religion as their reasoning are simply interpreting the concept of jihad to mean that they have to kill people they believe are actively going against Islam. Every idiot who makes a post like this is simply giving those who wish to misinterpret Islam and other religions more reason to hate everyone else. The end.

I hate to say it but all of you saying it's not religion but a select few extremists causing the problem ... you're only half right. They are closed minded extremists because of religion. These are the people who are trying to follow their religions very literally. And you can't say things that happen long ago don't count. They still happened. Show me one war in the name of science ...
User avatar #65 - thamuz ONLINE (01/05/2013) [-]
I dont get it.

Theres plenty of religions that promote peace and understanding, hell, even the Bible says it.

Religion is good,so is science, its people who arent. People warp religion to suit their need.

Science is just a bunch of questions that you can actually achieve the answers to.

Science flies you to the moon

*One out of the 2,700 official religions since civilization began has launched a plane into buildings

Not all scientific pursuits are morally good, nor are all religions morally wrong, in fact, neither science NOR religion can be deemed either "wrong or right", it all depends upon those who USE them that they are for good or evil, and science can be abused just as much as religion can. After-all, religion didn't invent the atomic bomb
