Is it just me, or are the masks the plague doctors wore ******* creepy? I mean, I wouldn't want someone wearing that to be my doctor.

If I ever become a Doctor, I'm dressing as a Plague Doctor every Halloween.

I think the had something to do with birds. Maybe birds were resistant to the plague?
regardless:
"People thought that “bad air” spread the plague, and they thought the mask would draw the plague out of the victims, and then onto the plague doctor’s garment. The plague mask also had eyepieces made from red glass, to protect the one who wore it from the plague’s evil."
User avatar #143 to #136 - ofmiceandmen (12/30/2012) [-]
I thought they had some sort of herbs or something in the nose that abosorbed whatever illness would be present? Maybe I'm just drunk and thinking drunk thoughts.
User avatar #148 to #143 - thedarkestrogue (12/30/2012) [-]
They didn't at first. They added rose storax (I think thats how its spelled) later on.
User avatar #150 to #148 - ofmiceandmen (12/30/2012) [-]
That was what I was thinking of. Thumb for the info kind sir.

Plague doctors wore those masks to be resistant to the plague. The beak of the mask is full of perfume to drown out the smell of the infected.

The plague was even in Arizona just two years ago... It still is not a dead disease.( It can be cured with just some antibiotics though.)

Plague did come and go. Last great outbreake was in 1855 in China. In Europe it was know to come back as far as begining of 19th century
User avatar #17 to #16 - thisotherdude (12/30/2012) [-]
Yes but the actually plague doctors (dudes with the bird faces) didn't really last that long, definitely not all the way to what appears to be Victorian England.

No, that's not good at all. Plagues don't kill 100% of their victims. Lots of inevitable survivors would have been killed too, along with their immune system genes.

Most people of European descent nowadays have an immunity to the "plague." It's like a cold to us.
User avatar #49 to #39 - HeartOfTheDL (12/30/2012) [-]
So what you are saying is that all that if europe wanted to conquer the world they just have to do is create the plague and unleash it on us poor other countries.
User avatar #72 to #49 - asschwitz (12/30/2012) [-]
Pretty much anyone of non-European descent. So, Excluding the U.S., Canada, and a few other countries outside Europe could be wiped out.
User avatar #302 to #72 - meganinja (12/30/2012) [-]
except not everybody of European descent is immune to the plague, it's something around a third. However, a plague outbreak wouldn't kill many people anyways, as the plague can be very easily treated by anti-biotics.
User avatar #361 to #302 - asschwitz (12/30/2012) [-]
True, Unless it was altered and weaponized.

Personally I'd rather go to the Old West than Victorian England. I'd probably die faster in the Old West but at least my arms won't fall off from plague and spend my last few weeks without being able to masturbate.

unless you already know this: teleport above them, QUICKLY slash at them, and you have a chance to kill instantly with a short animation (best done from behind and in stealth).
