You forgot to put the sendRedThumb method in between curly brackets.
#46 to #40 - lawlbird (12/30/2012) [-]
You can actually left them out, at least in C if the function comes directly after the if or else. But if you are running more, for example a printf and scanf, you have to use curly brackets.
User avatar #53 to #46 - zzforrest (12/30/2012) [-]
It works in C++ as well, as long as it's on the same line or you put it in on the same line then hit enter.
User avatar #48 to #46 - altairibnlaahad (12/30/2012) [-]
Guess that it just doesn't work like that in C# or something because it doesn't work if you don't put them in for me.
#49 to #48 - lawlbird (12/30/2012) [-]
Yeah, in some languages it starts bitching, but it in C it's no problem at all.

Took a game development class, with everyone in the class having absolutely no experience with code whatsoever, our instructor pulls up a code for a Doom mod or something (can't remember) and he asked us if it looked right. I spoke up and said "Yeah... Yeah, looks fine."
Pretty much mfw the whole class.

User avatar #62 to #52 - trolljunkusa (12/30/2012) [-]
Yes. But see C++ has a lot less "Help" with it. So basically you're writing a lot more, and when it doesn't work, you have to go through tons of code

I remember I was writing a code for a calculator that would help me with AP Physics, and a tiny bit of code was messed up in about 45 lines. And it took me several days to figure out what was wrong, till I posted it on /g/ and someone pointed it out
User avatar #83 to #62 - Xaftz (12/30/2012) [-]
The best way to find errors in your code is to have someone else look at it, so you got that part right.

Also, I have Visual studio premium 2012, and there's SOME level of help in it, making life a lot easier. But my props goes to those who write it without help like that.
User avatar #88 to #83 - trolljunkusa (12/30/2012) [-]
Yeah, the non premium visual was pretty ******* annoying. I recently switched to Code Blocks which I hate, but I have to learn to love it, cause Ubuntu doesn't have visualizer support
#102 to #88 - gjsmothefirst (12/30/2012) [-]
Codeblocks is great if you know how to use it, some of the advanced features of Visual Studio aren't there (like resuming your code after re-compiling - love that), but it's got absolutely everything you need to code well and proficiently.
User avatar #63 to #62 - Marker ONLINE (12/30/2012) [-]
I'll have to give you that since I've only ever used Java and Python. I don't think my major requires a C++ class until the beginning of my Sophomore year.
User avatar #67 to #63 - trolljunkusa (12/30/2012) [-]

If you're applying to any of these for the regular term (starting Fall 2013, that is), I hope you realize the deadline is about 2 days away (for most school). There's quite a bit of writing and such to go with them, too.

Same guy that hates gaming laptops, right? (not holding a grudge, just asking).

I'm in the application process right now, and from everything I've been told, you can change majors if you want to - your selected major on your application is more of a guideline than a rule (think Pirates of the Caribbean and the pirate's code).

That being said, pick something close to your intended field
User avatar #117 to #110 - trolljunkusa (12/30/2012) [-]
I'm going for a 5 year degree (Go through a rushed bachelors and masters to get two degrees whilest only spending 5 years) can't switch degrees with that. Most likely I'm going for computer engineering. If it's to the point where I have to switch degrees it's so bad, I'll push for it.
#120 to #117 - gjsmothefirst (12/30/2012) [-]
I'm going for a 5 year degree in engineering too, it's actually the same thing for your first 2 or 3 years. Usually they compress your senior year of undergrad + all of grad school into 2 years.

But what I'm referring to happens before this. Your choice on the application isn't necessarily what you go for - it's just a suggestion. Once you actually get to your college (before you start courses), you get to talk to counselors and such that'll tell you everything you could possibly want to know about the various majors, and that's where you pick.

You've got plenty of time man, don't sweat it.
User avatar #122 to #120 - trolljunkusa (12/30/2012) [-]
Oh thats awesome!

And thanks man, I'm glad I know that now. I've been freaking out over not getting enough information before next year
#126 to #122 - gjsmothefirst (12/30/2012) [-]
No problem, I hate this just as much as you will, might as well help you out.
You honestly don't have to worry about it in your junior year either, summer before senior is the earliest I've seen anyone start caring. Some people go on college visits before that, although that's just because it's more convenient then.

Also, remember that you don't have to pick a college until after you get accepted (unless you do early decision, which is kinda stupid - you *have* to go to that college if accepted), so you can apply to a bunch and then pick later.

I'm in Computer Science. Word of advice, just make sure the major you're looking at in a certain school means what you want it to mean. Some schools may think electrical engineering when you say computer engineering, for example.

Do you think University of Maryland would do that?
User avatar #81 to #71 - xmonke (12/30/2012) [-]
At one school I looked at they had programming under there communications courses. Maybe because it technically counts as a language, I don't know.

Not sure, I know nothing about the place, I'm at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and have loved in NYS all my life. Most schools probably will not, but a few may, so be wary.

User avatar #12 to #4 - eonelemental (12/29/2012) [-]
If you knew **** about programming you'd know that any IDE wouldn't think twice about compiling (x=1) instead of (x==1) so even Code blocks wont help there.
#30 to #12 - xelihope (12/29/2012) [-]
It depends on the language, obviously.

UNIX scripting uses if [ x = 1 ]; then
#31 to #30 - xelihope (12/29/2012) [-]
well, it can do both, if [ x == 1 ]; then, or if [ x = 1 ]; then
people tend to do the second
#97 to #31 - flyslasher (12/30/2012) [-]
I doubt people do the second. = and == operators are completely different and a language that allows you to freely switch between them only encourages terrible code writing that plagues the job market today.
User avatar #21 to #4 - malacrianza (12/29/2012) [-]
if (x=1) is a perfectly good statement. It's just a logical, layer 8 error. It won't be detected by any IDE or compiler.

#96 to #50 - flyslasher (12/30/2012) [-]
.-. Get your **** together if you want to write code.

Java Script is a scripting language, C++ is a compiled language. There are things you can use to interact with C++ that are scripting languages; I believe a popular one is LUA, but C++ is by no means a scripting language.
User avatar #164 to #96 - zzforrest (12/30/2012) [-]
WAIT WAIT WAIT
So what you are saying is that I cannot script anything using C++? I have to use something else? Because if that's what you are saying then sorry but you need to get your **** together.
#168 to #164 - flyslasher (12/31/2012) [-]
C++ is not a scripting language. You can't script with C++. You can script with LUA and interact with already compiled C++ code.

User avatar #54 to #7 - zzforrest (12/30/2012) [-]
Well if you work with C++, when you get an error if you look hard enough it'll tell you where you ****** up first, but it will always give you obscure reasons why like here is and example.
In File C:\asdf\asdf\asdf\main.cpp line [34] err C123312_1214 "@hax":: Namespace std sounds like sexually transmitted diseases when it is the standard library
The last part is just to say - it never says anything ******* useful in the last part.

Reasons are like that in C# too, but all you have to do is click the error message and it will take you to the line of the error.
