I'm a firefighter volunteer in Austria. The most emergency situations are drunk people who had an accident with their car....
It is sad that firefighters in Austria have the reputation that they only drink alcohol...

Well, in Romania there are lots of gypsies who burn almost daily something (tyres, cables, furniture etc.). So we go only for actual fires, not on accidents.

people suck firefighters dicks, even if they're incompetent 17 year olds who spend more time joyriding in/destroying the engine than actually fighting fires.

Just as an example, there is a fire station in front of my bus stop and when people see the truck coming back from a rescue in the morning the entire block claps for them.

the crime and fire rate is much more spectacular in the usa so firefighters save more important things= congratulated

US firefighters are treated like heroes no matter what they're doing. If they open a jar of pickles for you, it wasn't a favor, it was a "heroic deed".

They're cool dudes. Ya gotta be to fight fires.

firefighters in the US are scene as near-military status. They get practically the same recognition
and are thanked rather frequently, at least thats what Ive seen
