no no I'd really like to here what you have to say. I think Nolan's a great director and for someone to have an opposite opinion astounds me. Explain yourself.
User avatar #36 to #34 - forteatwo (12/27/2012) [-]
Some of the things he does in his films are just totally inartistic, playing to a audience that has no clue what a good film even is. There was a scene in "The Dark Night Rises" in which Bruce Wayne and Bane are just standing there and it looks as if Nolan just said "alright, now just stand there and look at each other while I circle around for five seconds." It's just little things like that that irritate someone who knows what to look for in a good film. And the face that some **** said that Tarantino was a bad director is unfathomable to me, but that's not your fault. Film is supposed to be art. Not just mindless violence and catering to an unintelligent and violence-obsessed audience. I think it's my curse that I decided to go to art school and study cinematic arts. Maybe I just have no clue what I'm talking about.
User avatar #86 to #36 - cocopopsonfire (12/27/2012) [-]
i think where your going wrong is that film 'used' to be an artform, now it is merely another industry that caters to the needs of many for cash

i personally didnt find anything wrong with his directing, but i didnt go to a school for the arts, and im kinda glad i didnt, means i can enjoy these so called poorly directed films...

ignorance is bliss as they say :P
User avatar #48 to #36 - lloydminster (12/27/2012) [-]
Yeah you're totally right, the man who created 'The Dark Knight' and 'Inception' has no talent. His movies are just unintelligent and a butch of mindless violence. ( Sarcasm )
#41 to #36 - jaggedpvp ONLINE (12/27/2012) [-]
because someone doesnt know what to look for in a film production doesnt make them ignorant. saying that makes you ignorant, if someone enjos a film, who are you to say they are wrong?

I am a photoshop guru, but i dont go on peoples instagram and tell them they're colorblind ***** lol.

live and let live, ***** .

I had not even 10 minutes ago finished watching The Dark Knight Rises so I was little spontaneous when making my comment. But I don't have any grounds to say that I have more cinematic knowledge than you since you actually study this stuff and I just sit on my couch and enjoy my movies. But it's hard to pick on Nolan because of his projects. He's got the Batman Trilogy and Inception and that's about all he's known for: A superhero trilogy, and superhero movies have never been respected, and an action-psychological thriller. For what he's done with Batman, I like it and I'm excited about what he's doing with Superman.
User avatar #45 to #39 - jinjo (12/27/2012) [-]
Rises was terrible.. the writing, the plot, the motives, the camerawork.. it was just badly done.
User avatar #49 to #45 - lloydminster (12/27/2012) [-]
I wouldn't say it was terrible, it was pretty good considering the fact he had to re-write some of the major part of the scripts due to Heath Ledger's death in such little time.
User avatar #72 to #49 - tkfourtwoone (12/27/2012) [-]
It WAS terrible. While at first I also thought it was OK, a co-worker reminded me that:

1) Despite being a Batman film, The Dark Knight himself barely appears
2) Despite Batman being known as "The World's Greatest Detective", his so-called intellect resumes to "WHERJESDATRIGGER? WHEREJISJIT?!", all the while leaving Fox and Alfred do thinking for him.
Not to mention that the REAL Batman wouldn't go unprepared in a fight, much less actually go for a head-to-head brawl withe the ******* BANE.

I mean, seriously?! Alfred warns him like 3 times that Bane is a savage in close combat that completely outclasses Wayne because *CAUSES*, yet the idiot goes "BLARHBLARHBLARH IMMAFIGHTHARDERTHEN"

Christian Bale is good at being the playboy, philanthropist and multi-billionaire, in other words he's ok for Bruce Wayne, but he is a complete disaster the The Dark Knight, especially in the last film.
User avatar #50 to #49 - jinjo (12/27/2012) [-]
dude, that movie came out 4 years before, I think that's plenty of time.

Still, the writing was really bad. Batman was stupid. Catwoman was so.. unnecessary. Bane's death was bad. Talia's death was bad. How did he survive? Why did batman trust Catwoman so much? Why did 'Robin' figure out his identity so easy? Why did Robin magically go searching the sewer pipes at the same time Gordon was goign through the pipes? Why did Batman put guns on the Batwing despite his 'no killing' rule? How did he get back to Gotham? How did he get his Batsuit? Did he sneak in, to sneak out, alert the bad guys he was there, then sneak back in? Gordon: Bane has an army in the sewers. Batman: Okay, cool, I'm going to completely ignore that. Ctwoman: Bane has an army in the sewers. BAtman: Oh, yea I should probably go do that. Batman: This bitch broke my back.. almost got me killed, and is basically the reason all of this is hppening... better trust her with everything. Gordon is in the truck thing with the bomb completey unsecured, Talia actually has her seatbelt on. Truck crashes, she dies, he's got a scratch.

The worst part.. I could keep going.
User avatar #52 to #50 - lloydminster (12/27/2012) [-]
Writing a movie once than rewriting it again takes some time, plus putting together the actors, creating the outfits, editing and filming it in many different locations (New York, Pittsburgh etc etc etc) does take a long time. It doesn't happen overnight. So yeah, four years does kinda seem like a short amount of time for this kind of movie. I think Selina Kyle was a great part of this movie. I liked Bane's death were Catwomen comes in and blows the **** out of him, that **** made me smile. Talia's death was alright, I guess. "How did he survive?" don't know who you're asking about there. Robin 'magically' went searching in the sewer pipes because he figured Bane already killed Gordan and dumped his body down the sewer already. Just like the one of the previous scenes where he finds the body of one of the children and figured the same thing was going to happen. Batman puts weapons on his devices mainly to intimidate his enemies. You can see this in The Dark Knight right after the opening scene where the batmobile crashes through the parking lot and destroys the mafia vechicles. When Gordan tells Bruce about Bane's army, Batman wasn't ready yet due to his bum knee. "How did he get his Batsuit?" You probably missed the scene were he goes back to his previous base from The Dark Knight to retreive it. "How did he sneak in?" He's Batman, hes a master of stealth. Why does Batman trust Catwomen so much? He sees goodness in her. Also he is human and humans can always make this mistake. How many times have you seen a boy and girl cheat on each other and fight but they always go back. I can't explain how Gordan walked away from the accident with the bomb but weirded **** have happened.
User avatar #54 to #52 - jinjo (12/27/2012) [-]
See you can think of answers, but they aren't very practical.

And some of these things are BIG turnoffs for me. There was no logic to him sneaking in, then back out, then back in.. if he was so stealthy he should have been able to infiltrate Bane's headquarters and take him out somehow, and avoid that whole last third of the movie. And that secret place, was in Gotham, so again it makes no sense why he snuck in, just to leave..

But I think a big one, is how he got back to Gotham, it made no sense. Also, healing a broken back, and being 'battle ready' in three months? And travelling back to America from Central America while staying 'low-key' is a stretch.

Bane being a pawn the whole time.. the whole premise with the bomb and everything was just stupid to be honest.

Even BAne's motives were lazy.

He didn't have to re-write the whole movie, he had to revise it, Heath died before TDK even came out, he had lots of time. Iron Man 3 comes out in May, and is still filming right now, and started in August I believe. It doesn't actually take that long. Especially with actors on contract.

I'm saying it was written lazily, boringly, and mediocre. It wasn't terrible.. I'd gie it a 6.5/10 honestly, but it was not that great at all.
#91 to #54 - jbkubel (12/27/2012) [-]
I agree with both of you. I too find the movie incredible unrealistic and a 'Lets make a happy ending with loads of plow twists that solves themselves out to entertain the audience'. Such as the ending where Bruce didn't die, where as I would find it more entertaining, and more realistic, if he died.

However, you can't deny that it was a good movie, although it had so many flaws, it still managed to entertain me. I find it amazing how the director managed to make such a long movie (in comparrison to most other movies) entertaining to watch and making it worth the while.
And I get the feeling thats what makes the movie good, amazing directing, terrible writing.

Btw, I thumbed all of you back up to 0 if you had negative thumb values, simply for having a good discussion on the internet with actual arguments instead of the same old '' Hurr durr you're a fag trolololol'' as seen so many times before.

Inb4 red thumbs for sharing my oppinion on the movie and agreeing with everyone for being a peace fag.

Peter Jackson did a disgrace to "The Hobbit" as well. 60 FPS, well above what the human eye can purportedly see, making The Shire look like a shiny tourist attraction and not the trodden, musty and sod laden valley that is actually was meant to be. Hyper realism in a story that is quasi-medieval? No. American films, and big industry films in general are really going down the ******** . All I did was explain my initial thought. And here I am, typing a report to people I don't even know.

If I were you, I'd focus less on Christopher Nolan and focus more on how ****** Micheal Bay is. I mean the kind of brutality where they shove your head in the toilet while they are ******* you kind of **** .

I'd be lying if I didn't say Christopher Nolan is up there, but I am quite the fan of Joss Whedon. You honestly cannot say Quentin Tarantino is a great film maker just due the fact that he did Pulp Fiction, because every now and then the sun shines on a dogs ass.
User avatar #40 to #38 - forteatwo (12/27/2012) [-]
I'm talking about "Reservoir Dogs",
And Wes Anderson's "Fantastic Mr. Fox"
They actually MAKE people think, instead of giving them every clue possible and spelling out every single turn in plotline and twist in character. You have to supplant your own images with a good film, a film should lend more than just "ooo look, a pretty picture".
I also love Jørgen Leth.. he's probably my favorite. It's really sorry that people are literally telling me I should be ****** in the ass for having an opinion that is well-read and studied. So sorry.
