Thank you.
[rustling starts here] I love videogames but at least I realize it's only entertainment, not some form of self-education (and yes, I played the "story-driven" RPGs, including Planescape:Torment, Baldur's Gate, which I love, and many others). I hate it when posts go on and on about how "Zelda taught me this" or "Pokemon taught me that". These. *******. things. DON'T. TEACH YOU!!! Books do, museums do, talking to educated people does, learning in school does, learning from online tutorials does, but not ******* videogames. [/rustling]

I mostly agree. There's one thing video games did to make my life much, much better and it was helping me learn english.

I was in a really good school until 4th grade so I had a pretty good foundation of english as my second language but my english education after that was mediocre. If I hadn't gotten into RPGs at a young age, I would never have been as fluent in english as I am.

I like eating lunch alone. It's annoying when people come and sit next to me and start talking to me. No, I'm not new here, I've been sitting here for 72 days, yes, I always sit alone, yes, I've been here since I was a freshman. I know they are just trying to be nice, but damn people. Take a hint when I don't wanna talk.

I sit alone too. I get enough social interaction during class (I go to one of those project-based learning schools where you work in groups) and it leaves me exhausted. So I just chill and enjoy what is for me the quietest and calmest part of the day.

Pfft, laugh all you want, but do you know how much those ******* make?

They don't even change ****. It's the same basic template. Mafia Wars, Farmville, two games that are basically as different as it gets the first time, and then it's the same ****, all they need is to keep the designs changed.

**** man, I'd totally wish to be in Zynga's place. Don't need to do jack ****, just let people play some stupid game about planting potatoes in 6 different games and pay legit money to plant even more potatoes.

they make **** load of money off those idiots
take farmville for example
>recolored horses people buy just to say "i have this and you don't"
>that stupid balloon game people waste 40-50 dollars on a week
>a ring that costs 50 dollars people actually bought

what's funny is you can hack the game to get most of that **** for free

I work in the industry and although you're correct, it is all the same engine, a lot more work has to be done to make it a different game. Kind of like how Red Dead Redemption and GTA IV use the same engine, but they're very different games.

The programmers only get paid about $10,000 as a one time payment or around $500 a month for a few months for the game. Zynga just publish the games on Facebook so the games can reach a wide audience, they don't make any games anymore. They're just a publishing company.

Programmers and game developers are attracted to these sorts of companies though because their needs are easy to meet, there are no deadlines and due to the nature of the company they can pay very well in comparison to other publishers.

That's why I hate Zynga. They do it for the money. Game developers are supposed to do it because they love making games. That's what you always hear from interviews and such. Money is always a nice bonus, but for games, I don't like it to be a company's driving force. I'm happy when I hear the reports of Zynga's stock falling and such.

Damn straight, game developers are entitled to a sum of money for their games, especially if it's an epic piece.

But Zynga's just the definition of cookie-cutter ****, and people eat that crap up to achieve some non-existent ending.

Hopefully with the fall of their stock, we won't need to see anymore "x wants you to play with them in x-ville!"

Yeah but when you make something, it's not really fun after.

There isn't really a love for a game if you make it, unless you like making other people like games, it really sucks to be a game designer.

Says you. Game designers love what they do. That's why they are willing to work long hours. Some games can be hell to make, but if you're with the right company, it can be a joy. Work with good people, make something you have a passion for. That's why I'm going to university to get in to game creation. I love games, and I think it would be awesome to create them.

Be carful on what course you take. Take sometime to research the course and chose the right one. Extra Credits on Penny Arcade did a episode on game courses and I'll have to agree with them. I have experience on choosing a wrong gaming course. It wasn't too bad but there was a lot left to be desired and only recently they've started to change it to the better. Good luck none the less!

I'm not doing a specific gaming course. I'm just doing Computer Science. Courses designed for gaming are way too expensive. Comp Sci is general programming, though there is a game programming class in later years.

True, also programming is one of the more useful skills in game making. I have first hand experience in having no programer at all throughout the whole three year course.
